385 hp vs. 405 hp Z06's -- Dyno confirmed?
As everyone knows the 2001 Z06 had a factory horsepower rating of 385 horsepower, which was increased to 405 horsepower for 2002, 2003, 2004.
My question is: Has anyone on the forum confirmed this horsepower increase at the rear wheels using a dyno? If so, do the dyno numbers validate an actual 20 horsepower increase? I'm just wondering if these are "real" numbers, or if there was some marketing involved.
I'm sure this issue's already been explored in the past, so apologies for rehashing. I searched the archives and couldn't find anything.
Thanks!

You sure you couldn't find anything?? TONS of posts on this subject here and at z06vette.com.
Yes,01's will dyno about anywhere from 10-25rwhp less than an 02+.

Bone stock my 01 Z06 produced 335 rwhp and 334 rwtq. It ran 12.14 @ 115.85.
On that same dyno...
Bone stock my 02 Z06 produced 353 rwhp and 347 rwtq. It ran 11.81 @ 117.26.
All figures are SAE. Times are with stock tires.
So the power difference is real.

let me see. 385 minus 12% = 338RWHP. How did you get an additional 26 RWHP from an Air Filter?

Ever heard of maybe getting a strong car from the factory?

I don't think that guy is upset, it just doesn't make sense that you are putting down 364rwhp & 364rwtq just with Black Wing. It's too bad you never had a baseline dyno.

It's my observation over the years attending many dyno events in about a 100 mile radius of my home that the 20HP is real. Do you think GM would have tried and fudge this with the type of owners we are? They would have been caught within a day.
In fact I've also noticed that 04's seem a little stronger too. I see better AFR's on 04's than any LSX motor. That supports the theory that GM leaned out the 04 LS6 just a tad but didn't go public with any HP gains.

Even on paper its easy to believe the extra 20 would be there- bigger air box opening, 2 less cats, and a bigger cam.
We all know when it comes to brass tacks if an 01 and an 02 are at a drag strip, heads up, the driver of ech car will have a lot to do with the outcome of the race.

exactly! 20hp is nothing between drivers of various skill. i'd probably get roasted by a '97 with an a4 and 2.73's, since i don't drag race and my skill in that department stinks! doesn't mean i don't enjoy the car though!

'01 Dyno vs. '02 and up
I can confirm with only air intake, air bridge, and smooth coupler '01 dyno'ed at 349 rwhp and 348 ft-lbs (SAE). Temperatures were up in the 215F range for two of the three pulls. First pull was up around 225F and I was down to 343 rwhp. So, on a good weather day with running temps in the 180 to 190 range, I can easily see a stong '01 pull upper 350's and low 360's with only intake mods. For reference the shop owner indicated most of the "stock" '02s and up are baselining around 350 to 360 rwhp.
All other posts are right on, however, you can tell on the dyno when you get a 343 pull vs. a 350 pull. Definitely runs faster from 115 to 140 in 4th gear enough to tell the difference.
Note, this is for a strong '01. My original engine melted down at 27k miles for an unknown reason, GM replaced it with a late production date '01 "crate" engine (at least that is what I call it). Came complete with block, heads, and manifold. Oil consumption is as close to 0 as it can be (I added 1 quart after 8,000 miles). Just the way I like it.
If you want high runs, keep the temps down (low temp thermo and fans during pulls with cooling time between (run with hood open if they let you).
