"Only" 385HP '01 Z06 owners take heart!
Remember in '93 when the ZR1 got a boost to 405 (humm) HP from 375HP? Anyone EVER see a road test showing the 93-95 ZR1's faster than the 90-92's??
But besides that, here is what the engineers say is the difference for '02 Z06:
1. Removed honeycomb screen on present size mass air sensor, duh, thats cheap enough to duplicate.
2. Larger air openings on air cleaner, well, tin snips or at the most a new '02 cover should take care of that one.
3. New cats require no "pup cats". Well, you could just remove the pups, but my choice would be to upgrade to the '02 cats to be legal, kinda. Maybe $500?
4. .5mm more cam lift. That is only a portion, maybe 30% of the increase, so not worthwile on its own imho.
5. Lighter valves and stiffer valvesprings. These are only required to control valve action due to the higher lift, the redline is not changed, so there would be no benefit if you didn't change the cam also.
6. Very minor software changes, which if you didn't change cam, might not even matter, besides, a friendly dealer might download the '02 program for you.
7. Tighter piston fit and an increase in oil ring tension. Well, that might even cost a bit of HP.
My point is that you can gain probably 15HP of the gain for less than half of the price increase for the '02, not even counting the depreciation thing. And if you are sitting on the fence on whether to buy an '01 or wait on the '02, well,,,,'01's are finally available at good discounts now.

I agree. I am eagerly waiting times from the car mags. It would be interesting if this was another ZR1 repeat, although it's hard to image GM would make the same mistake twice.

he he, you guys are so funny. :jester
Sour grapes, sweet lemons
I'll take my "sour grape" 2002 Z06 and you can keep your "sweet lemon" 2001 Z06. Both are great cars.

Alway remember that you own a Corvette and Corvette owners wave to each other. That was not the case when GM decided to give the '98 Camaro Z28 five more horses than my '94 Vette. Camaro owners now had some bragging rights at street lights and it got even worse when the Camaro SS was introduced with its 320 horses. GM should never, ever, let the Vette get outruned by GM "stock" underlings (i.e. the Camaro/Firebird). Remember, GM is in the business of making money and by giving the '02 Z06 more punch they're hoping the '01 Z06 owners will give theirs up and buy the new one with the 405HP. Who knows? The '03 Z06 (if they make one) might have 420 HP...and then what? GM allegiance to Corvette owners...it will never happen.

You're right, Mark. I had a 98 Z28 before the Z06 and nobody waved until I got the Corvette. I never once thought the Z28 compared to the Corvette except that both are fun to drive. Both the Z28 and Z06 are good "bang for the buck"! With the Z06 it's more bucks and more bang. :chevy

It might seem like the first year Z06 buyers made a mistake compared to the 2002. As far as power/speed, only a few mods needed for a lowly "standard" Corvette to run with the Z06. We all should be happy.

Rationally, all this makes perfect sense, but don't forget that 2002 owners can do minor upgrades too that can boost the hp "a little". ;)

LT1 - agree. We decided that even with Electron Blue and the increase in HP for the 2002, it wasn't worth passing up the availability of a 2001 Z06 at a significant discount. We can probably get pretty close to the 20 additional ponies with an improved air filter like the TRIC. Considering that it was about a $4 grand difference (increase in MSRP + discount amount - cost of new intake), it was pretty much a no-brainer for us to go ahead and get a 2001.

It took me about a year to knock off 5 grand off my balance.
smart shoppers(steve) can save that now.

Most important is its a Corvette and no matter how you slice it!
Look at the Mighty ZR1 there not refered as a 375hp model or a 405 model. They are all ZR1s .
Z06s will all be Z06s one great chapter in Corvette history :D
