Default Do our exhaust tips get shiny? Need to be polished?

My tips are kinda dull and I noticed other people with stock tips were nice and shiny like polished aluminum. I assumed the tips were titanium and couldn't be polished. Can and should these be polished? Or maybe my tips just need a good cleaning?

They can be made to look a whole lot better than doing nothing at all. I wash and dry the Ti tips, then polish with Nevr-Dull I believe it's called..........Tom

I just didn't know if they can be as shiny as most aftermarket regular polished alumunium tips look. I've seen a few pictures where they looked just liked polished aluminum but wasn't sure if it was just the particular pictures making it look that way.

I used to have polished aluminum wheels on my WS6 and always used mothers billet polish. Is this ok to use on the tips?

According to the 02 owners video, the tips are not ti, they're chrome flashed, so they can be polished, its not easy but it can be done.

Hmm, what is chrome flashed?? I Have never heard of that. There is no way my tips are chrome and if they were you obviously aren't supposed to polish chrome. So I have no idea what chrome flashed means?? Can anyone fill us in??

Just use some good old elbow grease and polish them up.

I just got done skipping through the owners video again, I can't find the chrome flashing mentioned. I must have picked that up from the C6 vids? Sorry about the confusion.

The stock Z06 tips are definitely not titanium.
I just use chrome polish.

Ok I read that thread, There are different polishes for different metals. Seems like some guys are using chrome polish and others aluminum type polishes. So I still don't know what metal this tips are?? Are they Chrome? titanium? polished aluminum? Once I know that I will know what to do, I just don't know what the heck the tips are, lol.

You sure about that Tex? Why would the General go to all the trouble of building the mufflers out of Ti, and then spoil the weight-savings by using steel tips? I thought they were chrome-flashed Ti.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? And if so, what the heck is chrome-flashed ti?? is that chrome plated titanium?? Are we supposed to treat them like chrome? If so, than you are definitely not supposed to use any type of abrasive polish on them like some people are.

OK, this is purely speculation on my part, but I would surmise a chrome flash would be a quick dip in chromium, excluding the nickel base plating process. The chrome acts as a simple anti-corrosion treatment, not that Ti needs it. I have some headers on my old Pontiac that are chrome-flashed strictly for corrosion protection. GM prolly flashes the tips on our Z's to add a bit of shine.

Hi folks -

I have not been able to locate the atricle, but I orignally though that the tips of the Ti exhaust were chromed steel spot welded to the ends of the Ti pipes.

However -

GM contracted with OEM company ArvinMeritor Corporation to develop the Ti exhaust, and those tips are Ti that have been flash-chromed (a special process at least partially developed just for this application).

Use any chrome polish you desire - unless you use something really abrasive you are only going to make them shine more and look cleaner than they are now.

Here is the only link I could find - does not mention the flash chrome tidbit though -

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...06exhaust.html

also - here is a picture of the tips - they are spot welded in place....

best regards -

mqqn

There is a reason this is in the FAQ. The tips are chromed flashed Ti. That means they have a thin chrome coating on the Ti.

Hi MAJ Z06 -

You do a great job of gathering the FAQs for this section (thanks man ).

I searched the Arvin-Menitor website and did not find any proof or a definitive answer (post 54 does not have any PROOF in it IMO..)- so I'll email them and see if they will divulge some info for us.

Here is a link to post #54 in the FAQ for those interested in seeing that...

And, here is the actual link to tip polishing information from the FAQ post...

Clean the exhaust tips, then apply a couple generous coats of Rejex. They will retain a nice shine and future cleaning will be a snap!
