New best at Cecil, in my almost stock 02 Z. 11's!
Went to Cecil for the Super Stallion Nationals, on Saturday.
What an amazing day. Puuuuurfect weather for racing.
First off, I have changed NOTHING on the car since I last raced it early last year (when I went my previous best of 12.0@117, other than swapping out my dirty paper factory air filter, for a drop in K&N air filter, into the stock airbox. This I consider as maintenance.
Vital Stats:
2002 ZO6
Stock drivetrain, gears, exhaust, wheels, intake,..
Mods:
-Nitto 555R drag radials
-Drop in K&N filter.
1)First run of the day, I f'd up my burnout, and staged at the line with the tires cold.. Took it easy to feel out the track.
60' - 2.132
1/4 12.424@117.93
That run blew, but it did tell me something. Eventhough I gingerly drove the car down the track, it posted its best ever mph. I was stoked, because I knew the mph would possibly be good for 11's.. Now to just get all my ducks in a row. the game was on.
2) Second run of the day was surprising. Again got a sucky burnout. But I at least got them warmed up for a few seconds. Left slipping the clutch slightly, with a 3000 RPM launch. Car responded well, and I tied my old best.
60' - 2.003
1/4 12.093@118.93
I looked at this slip and couldnt believe the mph. HOLY CRAP! almost 119!
Made a few more passes:
3)12.085@118.58
4)12.098@119.21 (MPH was still going up. It was making insane power)
Still couldnt get it into the 11's.... Damn, the mph was there, but my driving was not.. I thought about what I was doing wrong, and regrouped.
Was at the line again.. Was deep in thought, and looked over and saw my buddy Steve R with his Platnum WRX STI looking for a little ZO6 Action, beside me..
I thought to my self.. What could this little import have for my Z? OK, dont let myself get distracted by the little 4 banger. Concentrate! What was a I thinking about? Oh yeah, this time I want to hold my RPMS a bit longer, shift faster, make sure I take second a little softer so I get no wheel hop.. Oh crap.. Gotta line up at the tree.. Oh yea, and I want to make sure I dont hit the rev limiter, and .. WHAT?...
All of a sudden, the tree turns green and there goes Steve with a huge lead on me.. CRAP! Time to play catch up..Steve's STI had about a 3 car length lead on me at this point. I was catching him.. but it was slow going..Felt like an eternity until I caught him.. As I caught up to Steve, I look over and there he is smiling away.. LOL.. Anyway finnally passed him (seemed like in slow motion). Went into the return lane, picked up my slip, and there it was. FINNALLY.
5) 11.942@120.74
Holy crap 120.74 mph? Almost 121 mph. Does this thing have nitrous and I dont know about it? With Steve's lead at the strating line, and the STI's awesome launch, I only beat Steve by .5 secs going through the traps..
Made a few more passes:
6) 12.022@120.76 Damn! What is with that mph?
And the final pass was my best. I finally got traction and a smooth launch!
7) 60' 1.773
1/4 - 11.882@118.21
I was very happy to say the least! All from A C5ZO6 with Nittos(which never get taken off the car, I drive on them everywhere) and a drop in replacement filter. Wow. I still cant get over this car. 11.8 is what alot of guys run with C6Z's. I did it with a hundred less hp.
And this was an added bonus. That 94 is my previous car, that I sold about a year ago. Thats me on the left and the new owner, Scott, on the right. He pulled my entire 5.0 engine, and my Vortech bower, and went with an NA combo with an auto. He was going 11.0s. (Which beats my previous best of 11.2 with the car) Was great to see my old car back at the track!

LMAO.
Sorry Chris...couldn't resist.
Great runs. Definitely a strong running car you have there.
I saw the 11.9x, but missed the 11.8...
Look forward to seeing the car run in the Fall.
Maybe mine will even be running by then...

A few boltons.. Cam, Headers, gears.. (hopefully will have that by the fall or next spring)
And maybe some squeeze after that.. (probably will need a better cluth at that point.)
Should defintely be well into the 10's. That should keep me entertained while we save for a house.

Thanks!
Its only about an hour and 15 mins from me.
Cecil is a great track. I have always turned my best times there. Just dont go for thier Friday test and tunes. They dont prep the track and there are too many cars! Go on Saturdays or get in for a track rental. For the Next SSOTN Nats in the Fall, let me know if any of you are interested, and we could have a serious Corvette showing. Its 55 for the day, unlimited runs.

Congrats!!!
I can't wait to get mine back out to the track and try to cut a better 60' ft!!
I ran 11.96 @ 118 w/ 1.8 60 ft in my '03 Z after only having the car for a few weeks....only mods are K&N panel and BFG DR's
I love it when we run 11's in these cars stock....just shows how much potential these things have from the factory!!

I couldnt believe it either. The air was really good though. No humidity and low temps. That compbined with a decent amount of sun, kept the air cool, while the track warm. Gave you decent hook off the line and great power down track. I have never seen more people break their personal bests in one day. Almost everyone had a new personal best.

I was launching at around 3-3250 RPM.
Will the stock rear take a 4 grand launch?
Yeah you would have had a good time Jade. Brian ran as well. I think the best he could do was 14.80s. Still though, he had a blast. We are planning a new divetrain for his vert. Stay tuned on that one.
LOL, Time to check their schdule! Thanks for the heads up! I will try to make this for sure!

Again congrats to Purvis. Fine driving.
On the issue of breakage....
Z06 rear is stout at stock and near-stock power level. I had 400 passes on DRs combined between two C5Z without any breakage. This includes 50 passes on MT ET Street Radials with a launch rpm of 4600-5200. 350 passes on BFG were done at launch rpms of 3600-4200.
You just need a fast clutch release and to avoid the standard driving errors.
C5Z is a strong and resilient car.

Great #'s!
I made the mistake of going to Cecil once on a Friday. I got 3 passes in all night and the track was horrible.
Saturdays Test/Tune are a totally different story, well worth the extra money.
