Default LS6 oil capacity

My owners manual says 6.5 quarts.. Is this correct.?. The same as my old LS1? Can someone verify this? One of the vendors is offering an oil change special, but charges $13 more for the Ls6 because they hold more oil than a Ls1.. Is this correct??

ls1 and ls6 take 6.5 quarts. same oil pan and filter, i think they all use the same block, oil pump, pan, and filter starting in 2001.

Yes and can hold an extra quart when racing. I needed to use 7 to bring it to the full line on the 02 Z06. Don

Yup, they take 6 1/2 quarts unless your car takes 7??? My vert is full at 6 1/2 and the Z takes 7 - don't have a clue why.

My 03Z takes 7 to hit the full mark on the dip stick. I just keep 7 in it.

Both my Z06's came from the factory with the oil at the full mark, cold. Both took 7 qts to get the oil level at the full mark, cold, so I always use 7 qts. Simple. Good enough for the factory, good enough for me.

did my oil this weekend and 6 was all she wanted. the oil line was 3/4 to the top. didnt want to over fill her so i left it at 6. and yes i let it all drain out and did a new oil filter too. drove it about 35 miles since the change and still right at 3/4 mark.

also i used the german castrol 0w30 (acts as a 0-10w30). great stuff. this and SSO amsoil are the only 2 oils i use. its not the hydro cracked *** mobile one stuff they recomend.

ps: not trying to start a war

Did you fill the filter most of the way with oil before you screwed the new one on?

I didn't do this last time (wasn't aware of it). What's the purpose of doing this?

when you start the motor, the pump does not have to fill the filter before going to all the bearings and the rest of the motor.

Hmm, that's a very good reason! This is now in my routine. Thanks!

When I refilled the oil after the first oil change on my 97 it took 7 quarts to get it to the same point on the dip stick. My LS6 took 6.5 quarts to fill to the full mark on the dip stick but I always throw in the extra half quart. Unless the garage pumps the oil into the car from a drum the charge for 6.5 quarts is the same as 7 quarts (you have to buy 7 containers either way).

I do this on all my GM small blocks (02 Z06, 03 Trailblazer with the 5.3L, and 06 CTS-V) all of which have upside down filters.

FYI, my Z06 took 7 quarts as well before adding the oil cooler and accusump.

Default 2001 zo6 oil consumption

I know this thread has been done many times,But I am new to this forum and new to corvettes.I bought a 2001 zo6 down here in new zealand about 2 months ago.It had just been serviced and was up to the full mark.I have done 1500km and have added 1 litre of oil which is near enough to a quart. My car has had a easy life and has 30,000km on the clock and has 5w 30 castrol edge fully synthetic.I dont drive hard and our temperature is from 8 to 32 degrees celsius.Next oil change I might go to a heavier grade mineral oil,I dont mind checking my oil and adding the stuff but I think I could make the consumption a bit less, your thoughts please

If I remember correctly, before 2002 GM actually issued a TSB to re-ring some of the LS6 for excessive oil consumption. 1500km(932 miels) for nearly 1 quart of oil seems high.
My 2002 uses about 1 qt of oil right at 4000 miles mark but mine is a dual purpose car and see track at least once a month.

that is high, could be the old ringset.

a quart every 1000 miles isn't usually enough to create carbon build up, at least not quickly, and that's how oil burning can blow up motors. if the exhaust valves and ringlands get coated in it, they will eventually frag

the worst part about a quart every 1000 miles is what it does to the cats. excessive oil use can damage and potentially melt cats as the oil gets trapped and lights up in the cats

i would try 5-40w motor oil and see if it improves at all
