Default C6 ZR1 Brakes on a C5 - Serious Inquiry

Gentlemen,

I would like to know if any member of this forum has actually installed or knows first-hand of someone who has installed C6 ZR1 brakes on a C5?

I would like to here about the factual physical installation concerns.

I have just installed 19 x 10 inch front and 20 x 12 inch rear wheels, so I know I have clearance for the brakes.

Those brakes are crazy expensive. Just get a BBK.

Just because you have 19 and 20 inch wheels doesnt mean you for sure have enough clearance. The biggest concern is the clearance of the spokes due to the offset difference between the c5 and c6 zr1.

I had the wheels installed on a C6 ZR1 and they easily clear the brakes.

I dont know anyone that has them on a C5 but I do know they are a direct bolt on to a C5, with the proper wheels. Expect to pay in the $9-10k range if buying new.

In addition to the complete C6 ZR1 brakes at ~ $9,000, you need to install the C6 front knuckles at ~ $300.

The C5 knuckles deflect and bend under the braking torque of the ZR1 system.

Wouldnt this be true of any big break upgrade then?

The ZR1 brakes are good, but not "chassis" twisting good.

The single biggest advantage I see si the very low weight of the rotors.

I talked to the Corvette Chief Engineer at Carlisle last August and he told me about the knuckle deflecting. GM upgraded the knuckle on all C6s because of this issue.

Yes, it is a problem with big brake kits.

So even stock C6 brakes deflect the knuckles? Did GM make this upgrade in 2005 or in 2009?

Oh well, I guess I never saw this "knuckle deflection" reported by any heavy duty brake users for the 10 years I have been tweaking and poking on my C5.

I don't know when the part number changed, but the Chief Engineer told me they discovered the deflection when they were doing the ZR1 development.

What are you trying to acomplish with the ZR1 set up? You can go to a BBk with same results or better for 2k less.

Adam,

I have yet to find a BBK that has rotors that are as light as the ZR1 rotors.

Do you offer brake pads that are compatible with the ZR1 rotors?

Is your car a dedicated road racing car? If not, those brakes would be overkill. Like I should talk about overdoing mods.

Dave,

No, my Z06 is not a dedicated road racing car.

The brake mod will complete everything I want to do before I build a new motor.

I prefer the C5 Z06 and its roofline over any of the C6s. I don't plan on getting a new model, so I am modding my Z06 to keep it competitive.

Yes, are compounds do work with the Zr1 rotors. What is the weight of a Zr1 rotor? I do not recall.
