Default Wife is making fun of my car. Need new exhaust

So I finally took the plunge and dropped my car off for a trans rebuild, ls7 clutch, lwfw, and 3.90 gears. I asked my wife follow me to the shop so I'd have a ride back, and she was kind enough to oblige me.

When we got close to the shop, I was getting frustrated because I couldn't find the place. Consequently, my foot became heavier and my car became a temporary outlet for my frustration (basically, I accelerated alot, spun the tires, and fishtailed a lot).

When we finally found the shop, I got in the car with my wife and she told me that my car sounded "silly"...... Puzzled, I asked her if she had meant to say awesome, but she stood firmly by silly, and went on to add "too loud". Now my car currently has a full intake, as well as lt headers, high-flow cats, and a corsa-extreeme cat-back system.... so she may have a point on the volume.

The REAL kick in the teeth came that night though. I went to pick up a car my dad and I share (a 2004 srt-10 viper) so I would have something to drive while my baby was in the shop. I later took my wife out so we could pick up some items for dinner, and she commented on how she liked the way THIS car sounded (it does have a borla system on it). She also liked the sound of my old 2000 GT mustang (bassani x-pipe, and a borla cat-back).

This has gotten me thinking. Is there any exhaust system that is more reserved at lower rpms, but lets you know this car means business up high? I've been toying with going back to the stock Ti's, but I'd really have to hear it in person. I've heard some swear by them, but I'm worried they might sound a bit odd with the LT's

Are there any Md, DC, VA vette drivers with different exhaust set-ups they would let me hear in person? I do think something a bit more subdued may be in order.....

Thanks in advance!
John

Every time I get behind a vette that has a GHL exhaust, I really like the sound. Very deep rumble at low rpm, and at wot, it lets veryone else know that the car means business.

Don't be worried; there ain't nothing "odd" about it. Plenty of us enjoying this setup.

Stock Ti sounded too tin can rattly/clanky for me. A lot of the aftermarket systems out there bring out too much rasp/spitting in my opinion. It sounds pissed off, but I'd rather have deep tone with a burble (like my old 4.6L mustang had). Anything similar to a straight-through resonator type muffler like Borla Stingers or SLP PowerFlo seem to be deeper sounding with less rasp. The volume is also a bit lower at idle until you step on it...then it roars.

I may get flamed, but my favorite exhaust combo has always been Borla Stingers and an offroad X-pipe on the 4.6L 4valve Cobras ....and the closest I could get to that sound was the Stingers or the PowerFlo (pretty much identical sounding).

To the OP, my exhaust sounds like what you're looking for. I have LG headers with a Magnaflow catback. It has a bassy mellow rumble at idle and is fairly quiet at cruise. At WOT it changes into something a bit louder and race car like. I'm in north Jersey if you're ever up this way.

That's what I was worried about 02blackLS6! I have to agree with you on the sound of the 4.6L mustangs though. The performance may not be anywhere near what I get from the Vette, but those cars sounded AWESOME!

Striper thanks for the offer. My better half has family North of Philly, so I might take you up on that offer next time I go up with her. In the mean time, I'll see how many youtube vids I can pull up of vettes with LT headers and magnaflow catbacks. I'm also going to spent a little more time listening to the Borla stingers, just because I had such a good experience with Borla on my previous car.

My solution was a "modified" stock titanium catback, with bypass tubing welded in. Car is fairly tame (but audible) most of time, but screams at WOT. I have 1.75" longtubes with high-flow cats. I think the cats kill a lot of the raspy sound.

Corsa pace ftw if u like a higher pitch exotic sound. Zero drone and just right at partial throttle.. the xs power is very close to the corsa pace in sound and about half the price. I myself am in the middle of modding my stock Ti exhaust using 1.5 in pipe... will report soon..

She was probably just pushing your buttons, as wives tend to do. It probably doesn't matter one bit to her, just trying to get under your skin a little. If you have been happy with it, then don't bother. Tell her her pants make her butt look big

GHL with LT's and off road x-pipe. Hands down the best sound.

Corsa Touring with headers sounds great, nice mellow rumble until you step on it. Then it screams.

If it's too quiet get cutouts for when the wife's not around.

IIRC the difference between the Corsa Extreme and Touring is only the cans on the back. So you could probably swap in the quieter Touring cans without paying to replace the whole catback.

The solution is definitely a camshaft.
