[Z06] Nitto NT-05 vs Michelin PS2s

Nitto NT-05 vs Michelin PS2s
I know, Another tire thread.
My new to me 2002 Z06 with 17,000 miles on it is in route from Massachusetts to Phoenix and will be here this weekend. The owner and shipper could not find a date code on the tires but I am assuming it has original tires. This is just a play car that will get driven probably 5000-6000 per year and never in the rain. Mostly around Phoenix and maybe a short trip to Prescott or Flagstaff depending on season. (80-125 miles one way). I think I have read every thread and post on tires I can find for the stock wheels. Just trying to determine if it is worth the extra $600 to go with the Michelins. I don't plan on taking the car to the track at least for now. Normally run Michelins on everything but that is a big jump in price. Did have a set of Michelins on my 98 c5 with auto but a much different and docile animal vs the Z06. I am also thinking about the time on tires here in the heat and they need replaced every 4-5 years anyway. If the rears last a lot longer with the Michelins with spirited driving all the time maybe it would be worth the extra $$$? Thanks

Oh and the car is stock now but I plan on adding a Vararam, LG long tube headers, cat delete pipe, and a dyno tune. For now plan on keeping the stock ti exhaust. My dad owns a nice shop in Phoenix with a Mustang dyno: http://chucksspeedcenter.com/dyno.asp

Thanks for posting. Found some threads on this tire and will run them if available. Tire rack is showing not in stock so I am guessing no go. What about the BFG Rivals vs the NT-05s. Sounds like maybe a better option also. Thanks

Neither! I would recommend the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (PSS) instead.
The Nitto NT05 can be had for just over $800 for four, while they last only around 8000 to "maybe" 10,000 miles. The PS-2 is a much better tire, but will still last only 10,000 miles or so, while costing DOUBLE, or around $1600 for 4. The PSS is both cheaper and lasts longer......while providing better (stickier) contact patch for both longitudinal and lateral traction. Oh, and upgrade to four (4) 18" wheels

Talked to my guy at Discount and nothing available in the Hankooks. He is not showing sizes even close for the PSS Michelins? NT-05s available for $1070 mounted and balanced. In the Nittos I would need to go 275s or 255s on the front. Thinking the larger size from what I have read.

My guy at Discount sure seemed to change the subject or shy away from talking about the BFG Rivals. From Tire Rack I can get 255/40/17s and 295/35/18s shipped for right at $1100.00. He then said another couple hundred for mounting, balancing, etc. So approx. $1300.00. Guess I am still leaning towards the NT-05s.

I had the NT-05's and the now have the PS2. I hated the NT's for cornering. Didnt really do anything will in a corner. Turn in or holding. I do like my PS2's but the cost does suck but worth it over the NT's. Now I will say that my next set of tires I will be getting 18's for the front as well so I can run PSS tires. My friend has them on his C6 and they are great. Good luck

Ive had the Nt05 on my C5Z06 - Ok tire but **** for wear life ... They go real quick and they are so so track tires. There are better street tires for the track ...
This last set I went BF Goodrich G Force TA KDW 275/40/17 Fronts and 295/35/18 rears - absolutely love these tires over the NT 05's
If and when you decide to track the car - drop me a line - I can help you out. (I'm a lead instructor for a local track club - possibly even give you a break on track fees - (Oct 4 - we are east track WHPMP)

ps2 isn't even made in stock sizes anymore. that 295 35 18 they have listed is a porsche N4 compound
coupled with the front you would have mismatched tires that look the same
get the nt05, it has higher limits anyway

well yea...the pss is great, fast as hell in the rain, great in the dry, wears well
but it's not available in stock sizes
unless you factor in another set of wheels it's a moot point

Just put on a set of PS2s on my Z06 and I LOVE them. They stick like glue and the handling dynamics are amazing. They are a softer compound than the PSSs. They were OEM on my M5, and yes I go through a set about every 11000 miles on the M5, but life is short and you only live once. I was lucky enough to ride the Ring Taxi in Nurburgring with Sabine in 2010 and they use Michelin PS2s exclusively. According to Sabine they go through a set every three weeks or about 3500 miles on a set, they also replace the brake pads on the Ring Taxi when they do the tires she said. I guess that's why a lap is so expensive, but worth it.
