Default TRUNK RELEASE PROBLEMS!!!

I have had my 2002 ZO6 for a little over a month and ever since it was NEW the trunk will not pop up far enough to allow my fingers to slide under the lip of the trunk lid to pull up on the lid to open it. It's like it is rubbing against something but there are not any marks on the latch or the lid to show that it is hitting anything.
I have to bump and jiggle the trunk lid to make it pop up far enough to get my fingers under it to open the trunk.

I thought maybe that the gas shocks may be a little weak but they hold up the trunk just fine.

If I pop the trunk and then shut the door, the trunk pops up just fine. :mad

Has anyone else expierenced this problem?? If so, what was the cure?

Thanks
Bill C

Bill, I have had the opposite problem. On occasion, my trunk will not latch closed. Sometimes I have to slam it multiple times. Last Spring, while on a trip, we were all packed and nothing seemed to work. I repeatedly closed the trunk, pressed the trunk release on the keychain with no success for about 5 minutes. Out of frustration, I pounded my fist on the carpeted area just forward of the latch and, guess what, the latch "released" and the trunk closed just fine. Evidentally, slamming the trunk was doing the same thing, but not as efficiently. Also, I was afraid of breaking or bending the mechanism by slamming it. Pounding on the carpet won't hurt the latch. So whenever that happens now, I just pound on it. Sorry I don't have a solution for you other than just closing it again and seeing if it will pop up better on the next attempt. The car is sealed so tight that it might be forming a vacuum and the negative pressure must hold the trunk closed. Like you say, keep a door open, or a window open, then release the trunk.

The manuel suggests that you not slam the trunk but push it with the heel of your hand to close and latch. It has worked fine for me in this manner. :seeya

Sorry,, It's not a vacuum problem. It will do it with the doors open or shut. I like to blast it open by shutting the door. :reddevil Seems to work the best. I'll let the dealer have a go at it.

Heres a list of the (small) things that I need to have fixed:
Trunk pop up problem
Exhaust pipes are uneven
Carpet around the rear (center) well is defective. The Knap of the carpet is like velvet instead of the pile like the rest of the carpet
Drivers seat belt wont extend most of the time without repeated attempts of pulling it out and releasing it. :mad

Nothing too bad, just little things. I think 405 HP takes my mind off of it. :D

Bill,
Notice that the rubber bumpers on the corners of the trunk lid are adjustable. Try turning them 1/3 of a turn at a time and see how it works. Don't go too far or you'll find that the corners of the trunk lid are no longer flush with the body ... I'm guessing, but that probably means that some seals arent fitting tightly as well. Hell if I'm gonna run the hose over my car to see if it floods  I just turned mine until the trunk lid was still flush with the body, but would pop open far enough to get my fingers under it.

The carpet in the well area of my trunk is like velvet as well. I smashed it's pile pretty bad, and I suppose permanently, by keeping an ice chest in there while we drove the car home from Detroit.

Jim

I don't think this situation is exclusive to ZO6s. The same problem developed with my '01 vert after I'd had it six months. The dealer adjusted the locking mechanism, replaced the weatherstripping and put a light coat of lubrication on the weatherstripping to keep it from "sticking." Works fine now.

Jim,

I at least hope the cooler was full of icy cold beer! (Which of course you would never drink while driving, nor drive before 8 solid hours of non drinking time to sober up).

As a matter of fact, in additon to the water, candy bars, and soda, there was a 12 pack in there. I consumed two per night for the duration of the trip. After driving for 10-12 hours, it's amazing what effect 2 brewskis can have :smash:

MINE IS DOING THE SAME THING!

get outa here! thought I was crazy, I just put a trunk liner on and thought perhaps it was weighing it down or something-afraid of scratching my paint just trying to open the darn thing.

Mine too. I close the door and the air pressure helps. I'll try oil. I just consider it new.

Actually the cause of a trunk release problem is usually the misalignment of the latch and strike. To resolve the issue you can adjust the latch by tapping it firmly with a mallet or hammer (protect the latch first to avoid scratching). You ask youself how can you tell which way to tap it ... just look closely as the trunk as it nears closure and you should be able to tell which way you need to tap the latch. Fear not a slight mistake can easily be corrected. Do it correctly and you will be rewarded with a trunk that operates properly and on command.

Good luck.

To ALL

The trunk release problem on the ZO6 is SOLVED! Gary ZO6 hit the nail on the head. I used a little bit of spray oil (WALMART brand) and VOLA problem solved. If you have the problem please try the spray oil/WD-40 trick THANKS Gary!!!!!!! :D  :)
