I am sorry for calling you a bonehead, but I do think the spring issue gets over played

It is not a two hour job, and yes I did the job on my low mileage stocker:

Now this is not a two hour job! Nor will it be as cheap!

but i agree it's not realistic for most everyone to come close to that time

the guy i watched do it was a funny car & pro stock team mechanic, changed them all with an air hose and basically a pry bar

same guy can also do a clutch in a c5 in 4-5hrs

kind of amazing watching the guy work, he never makes mistakes and it's almost harmonious how efficient he is

It is going to take at least an hour to remove and replace the alternator, coils, wires, and plugs without breaking anything.

No need to remove the alternator. Remove the air duct and belt, then remove the alternator top bolt and power connection. Simple roll the alternator toward the drivers side fender liner.

The steps you foremention can be completed in 15 minutes.

I got a quote for about $470 parts and labor from a performance LS shop. Springs, seals, and gaskets. Might be a stupid question but I have an 03Z but how do I tell if my springs are yellow without opening the engine up? Last 5 of vin are 12926.

Open your oil filler cap and look inside. You should be able to see at least one spring and see its color.

Wish I would have swapped mine out, but I really didn't know anything about it until it was too late. Dropped the valve and there was a nice hole in the piston. It's a really easy thing to do if you just have to change the valve springs 1.5-2 hours is a good estimate. But I probably worked on it on and off for a week to get it back up and going once I figured out it was a broken valve spring. I even took it to the dealer and they told me it was a bad fuel pump, because the engine would barely run. That was the last time I took my car for anything other than tires or a wheel alignment.

I tried that, couldn't see it. Maybe I need a more powerful light. Going to have them replace the pushrods too. First I gotta order all the parts. Anyone know of a good websites that sell GM parts cheap with shipping?

summit racing has most gm parts available if you have part numbers

pace performance and scoggin dickey are also gm dealers and priced pretty reasonable

what's wrong with your pushrods btw? that's normally something that goes a LOT of miles

Sorry to hear this, it sure does aide in those riding the fence to hear stories of such.

Did this dropped valve destroy the block as well? These types of failures typically result in blocks too.

Actually it didn't. Was pulling into the driveway when it happened aka I wasn't beating on it. Probably would have destroyed the block otherwise. I think it was an exhaust valve that the spring broke on so it damaged the intake valve and I took the head to a machine shop to replace the valve seats because they were nicked.

I dropped the front cross member and took the oil pan off so I could change the one piston without removing the engine.

Here's the thread pic of the damaged piston at the end.

I have a very early build of 9/01 on my 02 C5 Z06 and my springs are yellow. I'm at 58k.
