Default Slight play in steering wheel.. not the steering rack

So I installed a new steering rack not to long ago and from what I remember the steering was tight and had no play. I now notice about 1/2" rotational play in the wheel where the wheel moves but nothing else. Looked under the hood and had the wife move the wheel from side to side till the play ended and saw no movement in the shaft. So the play is from in the cab somewhere before the firewall. What can I do to try and find the play? What could it be coming from? I did take the wheel and horn assembly off and see if that one bolt was tight and it way and the wheel is secure on the hub as well.

2003 Z06

Thanks,

If I'm not mistaken there is a universal joint right at the fire wall on the engine side. Check the Bolt.

I checked that... seems tight. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
It would take very little slop in the steering linkage to translate into 1/2" play in the steering wheel. Go back and retorque everything between the fire wall and the steering rack that you removed in order to replace the rack.

When the steering is locked and i move the wheel back and forth and feel the slop nothing beyond the firewall moves at all. This is why I dont think it is in the rack

I have the exact same problem. Everyone told me it's the steering shaft bolts. No dice. I tightened them up and it did nothing. Even replaced the steering rack and still nothing different.

I took the airbag out of the wheel to see if the splines had slop.. Nothing. I gave up and have been driving the car and dealing with it.

I suspect it's this part:

Not sure how to install it though.
