Default Blackstone results question….

Hey all. I have a 2002 Z06 with 74,400 miles. I just changed my oil and sent a sample (my third one) to Blacksone Labs. The oil (Mobil 1 with a Mobil filter) had 4910 miles on it.

To keep this brief, my previous sample was nearly perfect. This time the iron and silicon content jumped as follows:

Iron: From 19 to 27 ppm
Silicon: From 9 to 53 ppm

I think the reason the silicon content increased is because I let the air filter go too long. I have remedied that by replacing it.

I suspect that the main reason the iron took a jump may be due to the increased "dirt" in the oil as evidenced by the silicon. This past winter, I replaced my valve springs with PAC1218s. Is it possible that the springs could be shedding a little material as they settle in? I don't know what they are made of.

Blackstone thinks that the silicon may be a "harmless sealer", since my other metals aside from the iron are all low.

What to you folks think? Thanks in advance for your input!

Just curious.. What sort of container did you use to send the sample in?

Brand new, unused, Blackstone-supplied sampling kit. I have sent many of these to Blackstone for aviation-related oil samples, and also to other analysis labs.

A friendly bump…doesn't anyone else here have experience with this?

I have never had any of my cars oil sent for testing. I see this topic discussed a bit in c5 gen, might try asking over there for more responses.

I just changed my valve springs and will be getting the next sample tested.... you'll have to wait until January or February but I can post results (less mileage between changes although lots of autocross passes so it does get run hard for short periods).
