[Z06] My budget-ish head/cam

My budget-ish head/cam
Today a local shop started tearing apart my car for my head and cam combo. All of my mods are basically Texas Speed stuff on the cheaper side. I first went with TSP 1 3/4 headers with catless x-pipe to stock axle back. Car made 391whp with the headers and Blackwing intake. Heads are PRC 5.3 castings with a modified MS3 cam. Should have power numbers on Friday or early next week.

Well I was really hoping for 460ish whp and it fell a little short. The car put down 451/409 but my tuner said the intake was choking it. Once spring gets a little closer I think I'm gonna start with a powerduct and see if that frees up a handful of power. After that I will look into a bigger throttle body and fast manifold. For now I wish the streets would clear so I could atleast get one pull in. South Dakota snow is not awesome for Z06's.

I really haven't been able to do a pull to see what its like due to the weather. I did drive it for a few days though and so far I like it a lot. I see where some people complain about drivability with a big cam but I have no complaints so far. I'm really not upset about the power, they could see it choking out during tuning and said that the stock intake piece over the radiator could be the culprit. Considering how cheap a powerduct is I'm willing to give it a shot and if it changes nothing no harm or foul. I'm only looking into the fast stuff to see how close to 500whp I can get on stock cubes.

I don't think I'm even going as far as the pulley and pump. Fast 92 is exactly what I was thinking plus the powerduct. I'm really not expecting huge gains or anything but interested to see how far it can get with these "budget" parts. That's not saying it was cheap, but considering how much more expensive the heads/intake/exhaust could of been it will be cool to see what this setup gets too. Either way I have been very happy with the car.

When its cold it bucks a little bit, and below 2k rpms if I'm part throttle I can feel it. Its not bad in my opinion and doesn't bother me at all, but I could see people with different preferences get upset. Or if it did do these things in a worse way I could see it being annoying. I was also told that the car would go though a little bit of a learning curve and with the little mileage I did put on it, it was already starting to smooth out. Again it wasn't rough enough to complain about, I can just see where people might.

an ms3 is a stout cam for a 5.7 but should idle and drive fine when tuned properly... I have a medium sized cam and to me it drove like stock, never gave me any issues at all... I put in a twin disc clutch with a lightened steel flywheel (around 10lbs less total weight for the whole assy compared to a stock ls6 clutch) and when lurking through parking lots or over speed bumps it will buck just a little bit but that was due to the clutch, not the cam... it never gives me any issues taking off at a light, slowing down, etc... cams are subjective so I would find someone in your area that has a cammed car and ride with them to see how you like it, tame to some may be wild to others... op your car made good power, after a fast92 and retune you will prob be in the neighborhood of 470rwhp

Heck.. I would probably go a bit smaller cam for a broader trq. curve the next time around when I get to do another C/H/I on my next Z. I made 480 rwhp 409 rwtq SAE corrected with 4.10's. With every bolt on, 25% UDP, ported 90/90 TFS 215 milled to 59cc.. The only thing I didn't have was a an elec. wp. The only way I could of squeezed out some more hp and I should of done this was get some extra hand porting under the bowls etc. by a top guy like Ed Curtis or another top notch porter. Maybe in the 490 area.. Id rather have 460 / 430-440 tq instead. My cam at the time was a X-ER lobe 234/236 113+3... 20/20 hindsight eh? Good luck with your build.

Haha fair enough. I want to do the FAST92 with an LS2 TB. Then I'll be done where ever it lands for power.
