Default Michelin or Vredestein

Hey guys, first time posting, long time lurking. With nice weather around the corner (from southwestern Ontario) need to get some tires ordered. 2002 C5 Z06 with stock wheels. Looking at either Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 in stock sizes or Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas (stock rear size and 275/40/17 up front). Price difference for me is about $400 canadian with the Michelins being the more expensive of the two.

For $400 canadian should I just buy the Michelins?

Thanks!

I cannot speak for the Michelins, but I have the Vreds and I love them. Great traction dry and show a lot of confidence in the wet. I highly recommend them, especially with a $400 price difference.

Vredesteins are the best tire I've had on my 2001 Z06.

Great traction, wet or dry, and good looks.

Nice on the checkbook as well.

what is it you want your tires to do?

the nt05 is yet another option as is a wheel size change

neither the ps2 or vred is really a top tier tire. the ps2 use to be and ages well. the vreds are ....i'm not sure what to call them....ugly? weird.....odd?

Do you have any experience with the Vreds? Anytime someone mentions them all you do is post negative comments. I guess you're a tire authority and know more than professionals who have rated some of these tires. I have a lot of experience with various tires in many situations and the Vreds are a great performing tire, despite what you may think and would be a good tire even if they cost more. Unfortunately for people who are considering them, and myself who has them on my car presently, they won't be able to be recommended any more. I've been in touch with their USA headquarters, which is based in NJ, and the appropriate sizes for Corvettes are being discontinued. Their new tire which is replacing the Sessanta is not going to be made in the needed sizes either.

I was going to buy the Vredesteins last July but they didn't make them anymore. Looks like the previous post confirms this.

better choices exist, why pick one of the worst

no legitimate tests have ever been done on this tire, like a decade ago one was done in europe and conditions were not present nor the recording equipment. the tire has never been used in any sort of standardized test

so yes....you're correct. i have nothing good to say about a tire that's all marketing

thank god they are going away....that's at least saying thanks right?

If you're looking for stock size and you're driving style is street/daily driving, best bang for the buck is the Bridgestone RE760...

I have them and they perform quite well for the price.

Would I get them again? Yes, if they are still available when I need tires.

Hey guys,

Appreciate the responses thus far. Looks like biggest challenge will be tire availability. As far as driving style and what I want my tire to be able to do, well really all I need is a street tire. I do not have any plans to track the car. Just enjoy it on the road. But still want to make sure the tire will stick when I ask it to. Also need to make sure it can handle the ran as I do drive in the rain and you never know if you will get caught when on a road trip.

As far as sizing, I really think I want to stick with stock sizes; seems the safest bet, but at a price. I like the stock look and I like knowing my traction control won't act up. If you guys can convince me otherwise and that going to a different size front (don't think I need to change the size of the rear) will be better in the long run, I will consider it.

As far as original size goes, my only option looks like the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. The only options I have found in alternative sizes as the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta in 275/40/17 nad 295/35/18. I was also quoted some BFG KDW 255 something. Not sure if going smaller up front is a good idea...

Keep the thoughts and suggestions coming!

Thanks,

MY-C5Z06

Does Michelin actually make the PS2 in the stock C5Z sizes? If so, the TireRack doesn't sell them. They only show the Goodyear F1s and the Bridgestone RE760 in stock C5Z sizes (265/40-17 & 295/35-18).

Michelin's website say no-go for C5Z OEM sized tires, at least in a matched set.
http://us.michelinman.com/US/en/tire.../2002/Z06.html

Update - If I went in and looked for the specific OEM sizes, the Michelin website does show the stock C5Z sizes in the PS2. Interesting, but they aren't cheap thru Michelin, maybe much less through a local tire store(?).

I was wondering the same thing, but I've had two local shops quote them to me, with both saying they were available, but in limited quantities.

According to tirerack, there are many choices in the rear stock size 295/35/18, however, only 3 choices in the front stock size 265/40/17...GY F1SC, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, and Bridgestone RE760, which are also available in the rear stock size for a matched set...

I just searched the TireRack for 2002 Z06 OEM sized tires using the "vehicle" search tool, and all they show is the RE760s in a matched set. Don't even show the F1s anymore.

BUT ... if you go search for the individual sizes then the Michelin PS2s and F1s show up. The TireRack's search engine is kind of screwy it seems. I mean if you search for a C5 Z06 as the "vehicle", it should come up with all those tires in a matched set of 4 for the Z06.

Very pricy even at the TireRack.

The PS2 in 295/35-18 looks to be a Porsche fitment.

Thanks,

As posted, though I have been running the Vreds on the back it seems they are no longer available. I was impressed with its all around performance.

The Pilot SS are the best tires I have had on any Corvette, including my 03 Z06. They are not cheap, but if cheap is what you are after, then lots of options. Remember the old addage, "You get what you pay for"!

That being said, I have heard good things about the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. Just do not know anyone who has them on their Z06.

This article may help you.

Subjective but experience teaches:

I do not trust the Tire Rack article since they rate the Pirelli PZeros so high. I had those on my Z06 and if you want to spin tires in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears buy them. I could NEVER get traction on these tires.

that was a very well done test, street cars in street car conditions measured accurately.

one thing to consider about the pzero is the car they were testing on. if you can stay inside their traction the tires are pretty responsive.

at the same time ferrari switched to the michelin pss after noticing they were faster than the zeros

so, in the end, the zero is an overpriced overrated tire that would be good on a less powerful car if you could buy them on a great sale or closeout
