This just happen to my ti muffler!!
This is want happen to my right side muffler,
at 121k on the clock, this happen. Just driving along when all of a sudden the Z changed sound (sounding like it had side pipes and cheery bomb mufflers) I check under the car (being low) didn't see any thing, so I thought it was the gasket at the muffler connect that failed ad or the connection loosened. I drove about 20 miles home.
This cause the wiring, wheel well liner in the right side fender and the foam bumper block to melt. Some how it didn't do any damage to the exterior body. Some what lucky for me.
It may be worth checking your ti mufflers if you have over 50k and have been tracking.

Wow!! Must have had a weak spot from the factory IMO. 121K isn't that high.

I'v had a Borla system that I had custom tips made (never liked the coffee can tips)
that I have put on for now (nice to have a back-up) until I can find a right side TI. As for something blowing thru (cat explode), no. The cats are still there all in one peace. Like I said, I don't think it's just the milage, I have used (not abused) the Z for want it was built, Autocross, Track, and a season at Bonneville (to lock in my 150 lic.) Oh, and a month in Europe touring. Did you know that the trans will go in to overheat after 10 min of 140+, gas milage goes to hell too.
I'm guessing it's just like a hot section in a Jet engine, after so many heat cycles the metal fatigues and crack...

I don't think there is an upgrade for the stock lightweight trick as hell Ti mufflers. Get another set, do the bypass mod and enjoy. Everything else is heavier and just plain old SS.

Right now I have my old T-1 system on
(plenty of noise for sure and very basic in the looks department, and I kinda like that) but I just answered a PM from Jon about replacing the Ti's

Yea, I don't think that where the hole is that any thing could get up in there to do that kind of damage. There is plenty of what looks like heat distortion on the end plate.

In fact it may have been damaged long earlier and fatigue vibration then caused it to fail more significantly as the crack spread.

I think you'd be surprised at what can get kicked up off the tire and where those impacts can take place. I'd lay money that was road debris impact supported by the shape of the failure.

Ask a professional welder if that material can be welded, I'm sure given the right heat with the right rods it can be repaired.
You can't weld rust like on a normal muffler, but I'm sure if the material is solid it can be repaired somehow.
