Default C5Z High oil (not water) temperatures

I am seeing oil temperatures of 230 degrees every day while driving around the DFW area freeways at 70mph....a few days of 105F I saw 240 degrees F for Oil. Ambient temperatures are in the mid 90F range, and my water temperatures are normal. I would think that for steady engine speeds of 1600rpm or so, that the engine oil should be around 212F at these ambient temps. Does anyone else check their oil temps on the street, and if so, what temps do you run in hot weather?

IMO 230-240 would be normal considering the ambient temps and driving in traffic. My oil temp is typically 20*-25* warmer than coolant.

I have heads/cam with a 160* t-stat, fans coming on earlier than factory.

Stop n go traffic in 105* weather yesterday...water is at 205* and oil around 230*.

seems a little high to me, what kind of oil are you using and how long has it been since you changed it?... I keep my coolant temp on the dic at all times and scroll through everything else every now and then... I don't have exact #'s but I want to say it's usually right around 200 degrees

While 240 seems high it would still be in the range of safe on a 105 degree day. You are using Mobil 1 or better.....right?

My Z06 ran 220 to 240 on 95F days here in Florida with 58,000 miles and owned since new and 270+ at the track. When it got to 280 I would shut it off and let it cool at the track. First I flushed the radiator and got very little change. Five years ago I put on an after market oil cooler and a remote oil filter kit and I rarely see over 205, even on the track. I've always run Mobil 1 engine oil. I also wait until the oil temperature gets up to 155 before I get on it. Mobil 1 as I remember in an old post says as long as the oil temp stays 295 or below, you are OK.

I have owned my 2004 Z06 since new and there was a lot on the forums when they first came out about them running in the 230s and even 240s on hot summer days and Corvette said it was normal. Make sure your AC is on so the fans run more often. I have even seen 250 ish in stopped traffic on a 106 F day. I also use Mobil 1. The magic number I heard not to exceed was 300 with Mobil 1.

Thanks to all of you who responded. Yes, I use Mobil 15W40 and it has been changed about July because on July 5th I instructed at CoTA on a 99 degree day and I could only run 3 laps before I hit 286 degrees and so had to use 6th and drive around to cool it off for a couple of laps before doing 3 more hot laps.................

I use redline 5/30 and my motor is internally stock other than a cam swap... is there a reason you are using the 15/40?

I think those temps for oil are fine. Stop n go traffic sucks and beats on everything a little more than usual. I was concerned at the track when the oil temps hit 305, so in went a radiator/oil cooler.

Garrett, my LS1 runs usually around 207-220 in street driving. Not seen anything much above that. Hwy cruising is usually lower than that, maybe around 205 or so.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Those temps are normal in my experience, and certainly well within the engineered tolerances of the engine and Mobil 1 lubricant.

ditto....normal, your oil temp will usually be higher than your coolant, as your coolant can cool down faster ....230 is not bad

I just started watching my oil temps since I saw this post and on 93F Texas afternoons, I run 220 to 250 running it hard through the gears and high 220s on the highway while cruising.

I only worry about oil temps outside of the following range: 150-280 F. Below 150 I don't run the engine hard and above 280 I not only don't run the engine hard but I try to get it some much needed speed for airflow. Canyon carving in 100 degree heat is really tough on the stock cooling system, a Dewitts has been calling my name for a couple of years now.

I too live in the DFW area.. My engine is built, I also have the Dewitts radiator, spal fans,my coolant temp is typically 190-205... As of late, my oil temps have crept up to the 230's, 240's even on cool days.. It is IMPOSSIBLE for there to be a 35-40-50 degree variance in coolant, oil temps... I have recently added the AR 1 7/8 replacing LG 1 3/4... the primary is very close to my sensor... I attribute that to my higher temps (oil)... I did recently change from M1 10-30 to amsoil 10-40... Pressure is better, oil temps are slightly cooler. Are you running headers? Have you changed anything on the car lately? I also considered changing my oil temp sensor OR making a little shield for the sensor itself. Just my .02

What makes you think that?

That's why I bought this;

http://dougrippie.com/products/ron-d...oc-right-side/

Best mod I've done. All cooling worries solved. The only down side is on the very rare occasion I drive the car to work in the morning when its cold, the engine never gets up to normal operating temp even after 15 miles because the oil cooler is cooling the engine.
