Frankly, you're speaking about a minority share of the market. The cars that looked like fast and the furious certainly existed, but that represented a very small portion. In my area, if you drove something like that you got laughed at. They were simply the types of cars outsiders noticed, because how could you possibly miss them.
I built forced induction systems for a long time...I never once put a system on a car that had a body kit or a wing, or stickers down the side. The cars we built you likely wouldn't even notice...until the thing was gone. A 400whp+ Honda on the street is a force to reckon with.

Melting Slicks
I was into imports until I discovered first the B5 Passat (shared the chassis with the Audi A4 at the time) with a 1.8T that I chipped and lowered and added better wider tires, then I got a ex-NASA instructor '95 M3 and WOW! Discovered 50/50 weight distribution and mega brakes and a awesome motor. Still have it after 11yrs and 235K miles and its my DD and still rips like hell.
Got my '04Z as my fun part time car though I've put way more miles then I meant to on it, It's comfy and well balanced but I'll never drive it a 10/10ths like the M3.
Years ago Car and Driver tested a bunch of modded Honda's, Subby's, Evo's etc and enjoyed them, but also said for less money you could get a C5Z and go faster and handle better than all of them. Ha Ha...

You probably know more considering your experience, but it sure seemed like there was a lot of garbage running around until about three years ago. Now that whole segment has disappeared.

The real segment...the large portion of it, died in 2009-2010. After that time, it seemed like there is just a ton of misdirection and lack of direction overall. I see Honda's today that would've gotten laughed at in 2003. Real enthusiasts/builders have long moved on to other things. I'd say the real peak of that market was like 2006-2008...I was building so many turbo cars it was like changing brakes to me, it's what essentially led to my burn out in 2009.
JetNinja...100% with you bro, I own a 95 M3 myself. That car is a lifer for me...never getting rid of it. That's a highly underrated machine, for the dollar, just like the C5Z is. I had quite a "collection" a few years ago. The only cars that have survived are these two. The C5Z is officially the car I've owned longer than any other. There is just something about it I love...the simplicity...the low weight...the look...I just love the car. I could've owned a 2007 Z06 years ago, and even swung a 2014 when it came out but...idk...I just like this C5Z...it feels like the purists car.

People DEFINITELY don't realize the impact the Honda scene had on the ENTIRE car scene of today...even the C7.
People can hate on Honda all they want, but 1998-2010 was an era that spawned a HUGE growth of car builders that will influence the industry for the next 3 decades.

Where do I start? Ok......coming from someone that worked for Honda back in the mid to late 90's, rolled a big block Chevelle at the time, and works for Honda today, from what I've seen in the last 20 years as a Chevy guy working for Honda and Acura, as a company, Honda has their **** together when it comes to racing. The Honda street scene on the other hand was always a complete joke and an embarrassment to the company.
I'm glad you have a Chevy now but your perception of the car scene for the last 20 years is skewed. Not sure about the car guys you have up north but in Texas, the Chevy and Ford guys have been runnin' big HP, back halved cars with full slicks and alcohol/race gas on the streets since the 90's. Trust me, the Honda boys didn't start some revelation.
Hollywood car movies from the 90's through the present that cater to one segment of society aren't reality. Because you haven't been alive long enough, you believe the 90's was "the beginning". The car scene didn't start in the 90's. It was around many decades before that. The Honda fart can scene is a spec on the timeline and other than serious legal repercussions for street racing due to idiot import drivers, it didn't have near the impact you believe it did.
