Default Do you trust your Z06

Seriously....for those of us whove had a few Vettes

Go back and forth about eventually picking up a low mile Z as a DD. Something someone "saved" so I can rack up miles of fun..lots of em!

My current toy came out too nice after restoring it;its been running for 3 yrs and has 200 mi on it.
Blast and a half to drive but people cant seem to keep their dikbangers off it;had more fun when it was primered

Want something I can drive to work and not worry about it so much

Type of problems Im seeiing with not just C5s (just EFI Vettes in general) but since Im here, yes Z06 scare the poop outta me. Elecronic nightmares? Parts replacement, money pit waiting to happen? Confident in the engine (have a 5.3 with a hard 180k)just everything attached to it.

Be honest.

With nice ones dropping in the teens has me thinking.
Part of me says yes and a little voice says you havent learned your lesson yet Killer roofline though.
Easy to mod (Id port the heads intake myself, tune and call it a day. Maybe a small cam so the smog gods here are happy). A reliable mid teen mph driver would do
If I really wnt to go fast I got my Camino for that

For the most part yes. I can fix just about anything on it with the help of people like BC, dadaroo, Vetteman Jack, ET...

Ok to clarify....I can fix just about anyting on the motors...fairly good with them. Not so much on the Lsx but they dont intimidate me

Electronics if its beyond a battery Im dependent on someone

Are the rear axle assys wheel bearings a pain like the C4s? where youre constanly it seems screwing with them listening for noises, gauge watching is what I mean

I get in my Z every morning, start it, have as much fun as I safely can to and from work. If something happens I'll deal with it. If my main concern was dependability I would have bought a Honda.

I have 247k miles on my 03 Z06 that I've owned for 4 years. I drive it approximately 20k miles per year. I drive the same amount of miles on my 2011 Silverado. The cost for maintenance has been nearly the same for both. I do a little more preventive maintenance on the Vette because is hibernates for several months at a time.

I fully trust my Z06, but I do not daily drive it.

Moisture is the worst enemy on the electronics. If this is a constant issue, try using a water proofing sealant on and around the grounding points. That's what causes most of the electronic failures.

Never had engine failures on any Corvette I have owned. My 2000 did have electronic issues however, so I can relate to that. I semi-drove the 2000 on a daily basis.

I service my engines and drivetrains regularly and take my Vettes in once a year for a stem to stern checkover, just to make sure.

Just had a new set of tires put on my '04Z (13,200 miles) and drove it from Atlanta to Memphis. Ran like a locomotive going downhill. I've owned 3 04Zs and each has been as reliable as any car I have owned. I had an 03 that needed an accelerometer, a computer and a clutch, which is still not bad. Especially with the 04s, with the upgraded fuel system and shocks, Chevy really got it right.

Do you have to adjust the noisy Corvair valves every 5 miles? (My first car was a Corvair)

Over the past 10 years I've put 65K on it and never got stranded on the side of the road. Have had to re-solder pins on HVAC display a couple of times and replace "unlock" relays on both door modules and did replace valve spring (just to be safe). Also replaced trans after losing 5th & 6th gears - must have been those 120 mph burnouts. Did clutch at same time even though old one turned out to be in great shape. Drive it about 150 miles per week when there is no snow and we take 1000 mile trips whenever the mood strikes. I've had Honda's and Cadillac's that were less reliable.

Hell no, I once caught it sneaking out of the garage on its own in the middle of the night!
Now I lock its doors.

There is a guy on here with over 500k on his C5 with just basic maintenance. I don't see why it would be any different than any other American cars of the age and price range.

about the only issues i have had with my 2003 z06 was the ebcm...cheap 150 buck fix and has not bothered me since...other then that i had to fix the transmission but that was more on my end of tracking it damaging the transmission my self..not the car's fault..since that has been fixed i have had zero issues with my car for almost 5 years of ownership..2 years ago i installed a ecs supercharger and again no issues what so ever

The Z is great to work on yourself and fun to do, then just find a nerdy kid with a laptop and HPtuners and then hold on to your hat because it's going to be good.

Bought mine with 17k on it in 2011, now has almost 50k, have DD'd a few times with my DD M3 was down. But the Vette has never ever had an issue except for twice throwing a code that clears away. She does have better brakes, tires, Blackwing, etc. But she has been bulletproof....MY '04 Z.....

I drive mine like a work truck I put 5-7,000 a year on my 04 Z-16 track , shows club stuff needs nothing have done mods but really needed nothing in the last 3 years . I have never had a prob. with ele. stuff well the oil level deal but fixed that . Been all over the US and had big fun doing it ,would not think twice about walking into the garage and getting into my 04 and going any were in the US .. You here about problems but heck most of the people that brought 2014s have been in the shop for something .. Heck one of my club buds his 2014 Ray was on fire the other day .. My 04 has 70,000 miles 505 HP cool ride..

I do use mine like a work truck. I take it on the road in my work whenever the weather is warm and dry. I though of getting a license plate reading WRK TRK. I've got 144,400 miles on it and people think it still looks brand new. Has never let me down and I've also down some serious traveling too. Three times to Bowling Green and twice to Florida from NJ and countless weekend trips into PA. I drive it as much as possible. BTW, it's a 2003 Z06, lowered, much modded, CCW's and many other mods and I still travel with it.

I would drive mine anywhere... and back. But then again, pretty much everything on the car is new or freshly built.
