Default Clutch suggestions for mostly stock 01Z

Clutch is starting to go out in my 01Z that is all stock except for a black wing CAI. This car is my daily driver. Needing suggestions for a good clutch at a good price. Thanks for the help.

Look into the LS7 clutch. I have that installed in my cammed 99 coupe putting down 400rwhp. I'll prob put that in my 01Z when mine goes out.

Mantic ER2, Monster LT1-S or McLeod RST/RXT in no particular order.

LS7 weighs a damn ton and if you ever decide to make power or give it hell on a sticky tire, dont be surprised of the same sticky pedal issues as the ls1/6 clutch.

I run the Mantic ER2 and its a toss up between it and my set of Trickflows for best mod Ive done so far

A lot of people think of performance right off of the bat when talking about clutches. His car is stock and he daily drives it.

An LS7 clutch would be perfect in this case IMO...

I initially went with a Monster Stage 1 clutch in my cam only Z. The clutch was HORRID. it was crazy noisy, Drove like crap and smelled even worse.

If I can do it all over again, id go with the LS7 to begin with. Keep mind I don't race the car, I just DD the car...

I get it. However, the clutches I mentioned all drive damn near factory in pedal feel and engagement. Only advantage an LS7 offers over them is a slightly lighter clutch pedal and thats debatable, especially w/ the LT1-S and RST.

How many miles did you get out of the stock ls6 clutch? Guys have gone over 100k on the stock clutch. If your car is very close to stock and its your DD, I'd probably just stick with another, be sure to replace the slave cylinder while your at it.

Car just hit 145k. Bought it with 95xxx on it and I've easily put 30-35k just highway miles (travel with my job) and the rest around town and some highway racing, all on the stock clutch. It's held up extremely well. I'm going to go with the LS7 because it comes with basically everything needed for under $600. I will be getting a new slave cylinder and throw out bearing too. Should I replace anything else while I've got the it apart? Did just put a new tranny with 65k miles off a buddies Z that got totaled by a guy hitting his front end. Thanks for the help everyone!

I would probably replace the torque tube bushings too (the rubber driveshaft couplers) while your at it since the car has that many miles. The LS6 clutch is less money and has held up well over 100k. If it's going to stay a stock DD Id probably just stick with another. The LS7 with its stock flywheel is a good bit heavier, I think around 10lbs more. That's a lot of unneeded rotational weight. I think the LS7 is a good upgrade but I'd only go with it along with an aluminum flywheel to offset the weight.

Thanks for the help! Do you know where to get the LS6 clutch. I called my local Chevy dealer but they were charging upwards of 750 and if the flywheel weight is the only issue I will upgrade to a lighter weight one. They offer it for a little more and even with that the ls7 and lighter FW will still cost less than the ls6 from Chevy. I also plan to put on headers and possibly cam for some summer fun but won't do any radical cam. Just wanting some extra ponies for some summer night fun. And by summer I should have another car for DD so won't be getting as many miles put on in.

For an ls6 clutch I would check with Gene Culley for pricing.

THIS!

The only advantege the LS7 offers is the price. I can't for the life of me understand why people keep recommending it. The car will rev noticeably slower. Why would anyone want to spend money on a performance part to make it slower?

Might be a dumb question but what would cause the rev to be slower?

10+ lbs of added rotational weight of the stock ls7 clutch/pp/flywheel. Same as putting big heavy 20" wheels & tires is going to look nice (to some people) but it will negatively hurt performance. Every 10 lbs of rotational weight added to the drivetrain is the equivalent of 40 lbs of 'dead weight' added to the car.

I gotcha. Thanks for all the help throughout this. I still think ill go with the Ls7 because I'm not really doing any competitive racing (just some highway digs occasionally) so the little extra weight won't bother me too much. I'm more concerned with dependability, drivability, and longevity of the clutch.

Make sure you do the speed bleeder. This clutch needs to be bled often. You'll notice the clutch fluid black as hell and when it's black it won't work as well for you.
Good luck.

Not to mention it locking up when you try to shift at higher RPM's...

Default clutch

I have first hand experience, since we put an ls7 clutch into my modded 2000 convertible. You have to be aware..you will get more vibration because of the extra mass...just doesn't feel as free revving either. Make sure you mark your flywheel and clutch disc and have the new ones balanced to match the old ones...vibration will drive you nuts!

Thank you for the referral.

We recommend the LS7 clutch kit for the C5 since it has a larger surface area and more clamping force. It is also less expensive. You can purchase the LS7 clutch at the link below.

Autozone has the same GM replacement LS6 clutch with flywheel for around $400 if memory serves.

Replace pilot bearing, throwout bearing and slave cylinder while yor in there.
