Default Can anyone help confirm oil level??

Can anyone help me figure out where the oil level is at? Just had my oil changed and there looks to be maybe extra oil above where the actual level looks to be? Is this normal? I'm **** that it's been overfilled.

Roll the stick over and look at the other side, it maybe easier to "read".

Clean oil can be tough to see, and once you pull the stick out and try checking it additional times(which your pictures seem to indicate) the tube has oil in it which can make it tougher.I always check mine cold with my bifocals on, and hold the dipstick in front of the garage window so the lighting is good. That is my best way to see a distinct line on the stick.

Lol, well I technically could be dealing with the same thing if I did it myself. But I guess I'd know exactly what I put in there. I supplied the 7 quarts and filter though. There was no remaining oil left in my car so I'm assuming he used the full 7, even though the manual says 6.5 I know lots of people claim the actual capacity is at 7. So as long as he drained the oil properly I know the correct amount is in. Hopefully when I check it out after the cars been sitting for a while it clears up and it's easier to read.

Looks like it's right on the full mark to me. If unsure, check it first thing in the morning so there is less residual oil in the tube to rub off on the dipstick. If you want to be really **** pull and clean (assuming you are cleaning each check) the dipstick at night, cover the tube, check in the morning.
Edit; the manual states to check warm...

Looks right before the "M" in max. A little extra oil is always good if you rip on it.

Alright, so I went back out to look at it after sitting for a day and it looks to be right up to the end of the "A" in MAX... Is this reason for concern??

That's what I like to hear! I do tend to worry about things, it's just this is my brand new investment so maybe I'm a little extra ****. So the level being at the end of the "A" in MAX won't be enough to cause damage or lose some performance?

Well, not to add worry or more analaty (not sure that's a word) but I understand due to the oil system in our cars that you never check it cold. The car should be at operating temp, shut off, wait a few (5) minutes for oil to drain back and then check to get a proper level. That procedure is also mentioned in the manual.... That being said, I just had my oil changed, they put in 7 and it's right where yours shows.

OIL should be checked in the morning before start-up That gives you the TRUE oil amount in the pan!!--

So there's already two conflicting theories on how to check the oil, all I want to make sure is my engine won't be unduly stressed because of the extra amount of oil. The first set of pictures you can say was shortly after the engine was shut off, second set was after sitting for a day.

Yep, 04 manual snapshot for checking level:

...and what they mention about overfill:

Awesome, guess my oil level actually is something to be concerned about... Dumbass tech can't even get an oil change right. Figured I'd at least get the job done properly at the Chevy dealership, but even that was too much to ask for... I even supplied the correct amount of oil to make it idiot proof but somehow the guy still managed to screw it up... I guess that reading wasn't the correct way to check it now that I think about it. Will the reading be higher or lower checking it after sitting a day? Maybe checking it like the manual states will bring the level down enough that it will be close to correct? Problem is it will probably still be near impossible to read like the first set of pics, at least until the oil becomes a little more used.

You gave them 7 quarts and that is likely what they put in. That shouldn't be an issue. Many people who auto cross or race will run with the extra 1/2 quart. Their engines have not blown apart because of it.

Why not stop back at the dealership and ask the tech? If he says he added all 7 quarts and nothing more, you need not continue to worry. Just a thought...

I'm sure he added just the 7 quarts I supplied, the question is was the car fully drained properly. Does it read overfilled on the dipstick when people put in 7 quarts for the track? GM's black and white statement of "if oil level gets passed the cross hatched area the engine can be damaged" scares me.

You'll be fine. I can take a pic of mine and it reads the same. Key is :
1. Find a shop you trust that knows Vettes so = no worry
2. Do it yourself.

Maybe go back and speak w/ the tech. He should have no problem explaining what he did and why. If he is clueless, go elsewhere.. Relax and enjoy the car.

If it's low, yes. I've tracked my card for 7 years and always run a half quart over the fill line. Where yours is at, there's no need to worry.
