Default Steering Wheel Replacement

Has anyone replaced the steering wheel in their c5 with something like a MOMO or equivalent. I know this means eliminating the wheel air bag. Is there a way to keep the air bag light from coming on.

Default C5 steering wheel

Thanks for the replies. I'm on the fence right now with how I want to proceed. I understand there may be some liability issues removing the air bag and the stock wheel may be difficult to remove. I'd also like to know how to wire in that resistor.

I will have to do some digging on the hub used, Stephan at Englandgreen got it for me, its an aluminum hub, my wheel came with a resistor kit that Momo offers, it was a pretty straightforward install, I have read that some are having real issues removing the old wheel, The main thing is use a quality wheel puller.

There are several threads about installing aftermarket wheels, including what people used for the wheels, adapters, and air bag resistors. Most are in the C5 General and Autocross/Roadracing forums. A simple search will provide lots of links.

A 5 watt 2.2 ohm resistor is what I use. I just stick the leads into the wire harness where it plugs into the airbag and zip tie it up so it doesn't come loose.

thanks again for all the feedback. Great stuff. I ended up sending my wheel to vette essentials to have it redone by them. Great people to work with.

You would not be able to get this wheel, but here is the 'Raid' SW with a functioning air bag installed in a forum members car in Germany.

I have looked on NRG website for the NON-quick disconnect c5 hub/adapter and can't find it listed? Does someone have an alternative vendor or link?

Oh perfect! So with just that single piece I should be able to connect and aftermarket (sparco, OM, whatever) race wheel to my existing steering column? Sorry to beat a dead horse here just want to make sure I'm not coming up short

Yes & no. It depends on the steering wheel you are installing. It needs to have enough of a dish to clear the turn signal and and wiper stalks. With a flat steering wheel you'll need some kind of spacer or a quick release. I think most people opt for the quick release. It doesn't cost that much more than a spacer and adds the quick release function. I have the NRG hub, NRG gen 2.0 quick release with a momo monte carlo steering wheel. iirc it move the steering wheel about 1 inch closer to the driver. Not very noticeable. What is more noticeable is that your turn signal stalk is now 1 further away from your fingers. Not a big deal but it does take some getting use to.
