New MY Z owner
Hi everyone- just wanted to check in as I just joined the forum. I just purchased a 2003 Z06 a few weeks ago to serve as my track car. I'm a long time Porsche enthusiast but the value of my cars has gone up so much in the past few years that I'm no longer comfortable risking them at the track or paying an absurd amount for track insurance. I spent about a year looking at all sorts of options for a track car and in the end decided nothing could beat a C5 Z06. The car is fast, has fairly inexpensive consumables (at least compared to Porsche) and is super fun to drive. In fact, I haven't so much as started either of the other cars since the Z came off the delivery truck. I autocrossed with the SCCA for many years back in the 2000s and always ran against C5Zs in ASP. My former competitors all love that I've come to the "dark side".
Anyways, I'll let this be the start of a build thread as I improve the car over time.

Nice stable of toys. Do you have any threads on the other 2 cars? Love me some 993.

I drove a few 996 turbos and they were fun to drive. I would imagine the 997 turbo be very similar. To me, the porsche felt heavier but the AWD feels more planted and stable. The C5Z seems pretty tail happy in the corners.

So overall the 3-4x price tag for the porsche is just for the name and status?

Super choice! I still can't get over the performance of my Z and the relative minor sum of money needed to have this performance and fairly well refined machine. I still can't get the smile off my face when I drive it. American muscle at its finest.

The 996 Turbo and the C5Z are very similar in performance.

I was actually comparing the Z06 with the GT3RS. I haven't had them both on the track yet but the initial performance impressions are pretty similar and the cars have similar specs on paper. I only wish the 993 was that fast- with 270 HP its a bit of a snooze behind the Z and the 3 but its still a fun car- especially on the street where the power is really usable and not enough that you are always about to cross the line. A 997 Turbo (or 996 for that matter) could blow them all away with a few mods to crank up the boost. My point was that the Z06 feels pretty similar to a car that is trading for about 10x what I paid for the Z06.
