I shortened the shaft about an inch and added a Twistedshifterz ****, otherwise no complaints.

What exactly is so much better to you? I am the rare guy who likes my factory shifter; very little play, kinda notchy, never even came close to missing a gear... my BMW shifters were crazy loose, almost sloppy in comparison.

Also questioning if you have a stock shifter.
I've driven a handful of C5's and the stock shifter is incredibly loose. You can put it in any gear and there is enough slack to jiggle it all over the place. Plus, incredibly long throws and very rubbery feeling.
Anyway, I agree with these guys. The MGW is the best of the c5 shifter market. Very tight feeling, needs a bit more effort, very direct and firm.

I've posted a new thread over on General for more input, and so I'm not hogging the OP's thread.

Are you sure yours still has the stock shifter? Just saying if you bought the car used someone could have installed a c6 shifter, that is a pretty good shifter. I thought the stock shifter in mine was sloppy, not precise at all. I've had used Honda accords that shifted better. The description of yours sounds nothing like how my stock shifter was. The MGW is very exact and precise, like night and day difference over stock.

MGW is perfect.

If you're interested, I have a new-style MGW with the billet lower box for sale. I pulled it off because my wife didn't care for it (she's my designated driver at times)

wondering
I just pulled out my shifter today. The car was bought from the original owner and he said it had a "C6 ****". It's obviously been apart and now I'm wondering if the entire shifter is a C6. How could I tell the difference?

After I added the MGW I wanted a little more precision so got a new c6 shifter and installed the base box with my MGW shifter. Shifts were even better with this setup. I only needed the shifter box but wasn't sure how to order just that part so I got the whole shifter.

thanks!
My stock c5 shifter on the left, a stock c6 shifter on the right

When you go into gear, you now will really know you are in gear.
When you shift it just springs to the right direction. You can race with two fingers.

I can't stand the ridiculously long throws and and vagueness of the stock shifter. It may be because I'm used to the short shifter in my Cobalt SS that clearly let's me know when I am in or out of gear. I'll have an MGW in my C5Z this weekend hopefully.
