Default What changed from the 01 to the 02-04 Z06?

Hello, I am new to the forum and have been looking for a clean C5. There is quite a price difference between the 2001 Z06's and the 2002 - 2004. What changed to get the HP to 405 from 385? Are there other reasons to avoid the 2001? Thanks, Dennis

Different cats, but most of the hp difference was from a higher lift cam in 02-04. SOME 01's suffered from excessive oil use from a problem with the rings.

I heard somewhere the '04's had a few specific parts as well. (carbon?) hood, fenders...
Any truth there?

GM High Tech Performace magazine (now defunct) said at that time when describing the virtues of the new SLP parts they were installing on a project car had a single sentence stating that it's the same clutch in all '02 Corvettes and f-bodies which has slightly more clamping force over the '01 model.

The '04 Z06 (all of them) got different shocks and slightly revised springs.
The '04 Z06 with the Z16 Commemorative option got a carbon fiber hood, but not fenders.

Valve springs not changed till mid year 2003 models
'04's got the same fueling system as the C6, and the fuel filter inside the tank.

The transmission gearing and the LS7's 7000rpm redline lets it easily walk a C5z with similar power.

Yep with similar power ,I got 450 to the wheels on LMR roller . I guess I am a little lighter and a little more power the C-7s can't catch my 04 ,had one guy in the club sell his 2014 C7 LOl I out ran him made him mad yep sold it ..Got to love it .. I don't know if his was running bad or my 04 was running good ,on the track could never get any closer than 6 car lengths ..

Not all the changes were positive, some were cost cutting (went from forged wheels to cast) and 02-03 c5z had valve spring failures. If you are looking to keep the car showroom stock then an 04 might justify a little more money but if you plan to modify there is no reason to pay more for 02-04. Things people change on all years is usually exhaust, intake and cam so there is not really any HP advantage.

I think that's a backwards. The change in cam spec is too small to make a significant difference in power IMO.

I'd say 50/50 being generous.

OP, an 01 and an 02 driven side by side you would probably not even notice a difference. Racing them? Drivers race. Period.

Modded? All bets are off when you start modding.

Also, to be fair, if you're going to point out 01's ring issues don't forget 02's breaking springs either lol
