Default LOW OIL PRESSURE?

I restarted my car after filling up the gas tank tonight and the DIC reported “LOW OIL PRESSURE”. I notice the oil pressure meter was sitting on zero. So I immediately turned the motor off and checked the oil level, which was full. I restarted the motor and the oil pressure came up to 17-20psi at idle, which seemed low? While driving home and the motor was revving the oil pressure seemed normal 35-50psi but while idling the oil pressure would drop to back down to 17-20psi.

Other Vitals were:
Oil Temp = 208
Coolant Temp = 190

Does anyone have any input?

I'd use a mechanical gauge to check the accuracy of your sending unit and dash gauge.

Also, did it start happening after "just driving along" or after you were beating on it?

It was after normal driving. The oil pressure used to be read 35psi at idle?

Check your gauge system.... but it makes me nervous when my guages act up to! Never know when it is real.

Like the others have said - Check that pressure with a external gauge so you get and accurate reading.

How many miles are on your car??

I was just reading your post in the tech section and I was thought I went crazy for a second when I couldn't find my response.. Just realized there are 2 posts.

Just for a reference my engine had about 35 psi at idle, like yours, before I swapped for a ported pump,. It is now about 51psi at idle.

I believe the "Low Oil Pressure" light gets tripped when there is < 10 psi. Check your sending unit and check actual pressure first. If you find it to be low it may be time for a new pump, but to be honest @ 8500 miles I would be suprised if is the pump

I scheduled a trip to the dealer. He thinks it’s most likely the oil pressure sensor located in the oil pan and will be covered under warranty.
