Default Do all stock rotors rust over quickly after washing?

I like the look of the red calipers and shinny rotors through the stock rims of my 2002. I've only owned it for one week. I washed the car and wheels. As I was drying the wheels and I noticed the rotors flashed over in rust very quickly. They looked crappy. I suppose driving the car and applying the brakes will help. Any way to prevent this or is this common with all Z06's?

Thanks,

trebor?

I don't think you can prevent it, but a quick drive takes care of it.

Rusting Rotors is common to to all factory rotors. The rust is gone after 1st next braking application.

I suspect the Z's rotors form rust a bit faster than average is due to the special light-weight design. Unfortunately, the side effects for the awsome breaking power the car has is Rust and Dust

There probably are aftermarket rotors that do not rust, but they would be fairly expensive and you could go with GM Ceramic pads and sacrifice some stopping power for little to no dust which they say is good enough for normal street driving.

All rotors on all cars rust (well, except Porsche's and Ferrari's carbon/ceramic rotors )

After washing and drying, then drive around the block and braking a couple of times will heat-up and dry the rotors so it can be parked and still look good. I do this for all my cars.

Driving your car after the wash to remove the rust will only do good in the fire path. The centers will always be rusty. The only fix is to buy a rotor with different material. I bought some Baer rotors, cross drilled and slotted, for all for corners putting an $800 dent in my wallet. It looks great with no rust, but don't take them to the track.

Ceramic pads work great as far as no dust, but if you power brake from much over 60-70 mph, you may get brake fade which will add quite a bit of stopping distance.

I had a set of rotors drilled, slotted and then zinc coated. My stock rotors that were painted were a rusty mess when I initially pulled them off the car after 6 months. The zinc washed (or coated) rotors have been on the car for a year now and no rust.

Sure, the braking surface will rust because this part gets warn off with pad to rotor wear, but that part just burns off the first time you apply the brakes. The rest of the rotor is completely rust free including the hats and the cooling fins on the side.

Almost any production cars will have their rotors rust if they got wet. Short of changing to carbon or titanium (or other metal that doesn't corrode in such behavior) rotors, there isn't much that you can do.

With the zinc wash or zinc coating, the only part that will rust is the braking surface because the zinc coating gets worn off from the pads when you use the brakes. This rust would come off as soon as you drive your car and use the brakes though and the rest of the rotor would remain rust free.

Default Wd

I simply spray WD-40 on them.

No; just kidding. Would be a deadly mistake to place a lubricant on the rotors.

I clean the wheels once a week using a soft wet towel and only hose them down when I wash the entire car.

Default Nope

No. My Miata rotors don't rust right away after being washed like my ZO6 rotors do. The Miata will also stop so fast, it's almost scary.

Go ahead and make fun of the Miata. It's a way better quality built car than my Corvette. Just the facts.

Just some facts, seat of the pants has no correlation to real world many times.

Road and Track June 2000
Miata
60-0 150ft
80-0 282ft

March 2003
Z06
60-0 114
80-0 204

and I even doubt the rust part too.

Also, I find it surprising someone has never seen a rotor rust after being washed before.

I guess that was a good reply to Mr. Miata

Darn, I should have bought a Miata then because not only do the rotors on my Z06 rust, but they rust on my 911, M3, M5, and even on my wife's Lexus RX300.

Sheesh...

Default Cheap Metal.

The only thing I can say is that it must be some cheap metal. I have another exotic and the rotors never rust after washing. I swapped out the rotors for some high performance certamics and I must say the stop is much more powerful and provides less fade. Plus, there is no rust.

What exotic? Don't be shy we have plenty of guys with super expensive cars here. Some of the Brembos do have some type of coating on them, but the swept area will lose that coating and get the minor flash rust.

If I park my Z06 after washing it and it sits for a few days it seems like the pads will rust/adhere to the rotors and it feels like the brakes are frozen the next time I go to drive it. I will usually need to rock it to free them up. I usually try to drive it a short distance to dry them before parking now so this does not happen. Anybody else experience this?
