The car is a tribute to the first Corvette chief engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov, himself a legend in racing. In fact, several of the designations used on the new car Z06 for the model name and LS6 for the engine are an homage to the man who shaped the car's history for many years.

It is correct. Back in the 60's there was this anti-racing sentiment from the auto manufacturers, so all factory sponsored racing was forbidden by Chevrolet. The sneaky Duntov and his team, all performance fanatics, came up with a special Z06 option package for a regular Corvette. This option was more expensive than the Corvette itself, and basically turned the car in to a race car. Only two or three were built if I remember correctly, and they raced for a season until the factory firgured out what was going on. From what I understand, even though there were big block 'vettes at the time, the original Z06 'vettes came with a 327cid engine due to the displacement rules for the racing series at the time.

There were no big block engines available for the Corvette until 1965.

and gettinavettesoon, i think the cavalier's Z24 package your thinking of is almost as cool as the Z34 option on my brother's old lumina
but i still think we have the best Z option ever made available

Boy.. I had that one wrong. I thought that the Z stood for Louis Chevrolet's brother-in-law Zebulon and the '06 stood for 1906, the first year that Zebulon won a race in a Chevrolet. I guess the whole Zora Duntov story makes more sense.
