what's in a number anyway?
I'm pretty sure it's a Zero as in the number but the O as in the alphabit has stuck in the name. So instead saying of Z - zero - 6 everyone adds the ohhh .... like people say it's an Oh four instead of it's a Zero four ...

I would have to say "number 0", not "letter O" . I base this on the fact that GM has built several other Z's over the years.
- Z28(Camaro, obviously ), as well as:
- Z22 (Cavalier)
- Z24 (Cavalier)
- Z26 (Beretta)
- Z34 (Lumina)
- Z36 (Monte Carlo, or Lumina? )
- Z71 (trucks)

- Z71 (trucks)

The Z zero six is an RPO number from back in the 60's that they used again, Like Z51, LS6 etc. So it would be Z zero six according to the RPO number.

Good original question, proper answer, how about some nit-picking ?
When I look at my original window sticker:
The first line in the upper left corner is "2004 CORVETTE Z06".
The type font shows clearly the difference between the letter "O" and the number "zero".
The "O" in Corvette is not the same as the "0" in 2004.
The "0" in Z06 is the same as the zeros in "2004".
Therefore, I conclude (actually I already knew), it is Z "zero" 6.
But, it is, as always, pronounced "Zee oh six". In the U.S.
This follows the GM convention for defining "options", sometimes upgraded to "model", like Z28, Z71, etc.
The ways of the General and the car community are deep and mysterious.
And, please, no crap from the Canadians about "Zed oh six". I know, I know. I have a '71 Zed 28.
I pulled a "real" Trans-Am Camaro to St. Jovite, Quebec track for the 1968 race on a open trailer,
and all I heard was poor kids on the side of the two-lane road yelling "Zed 28, Zed 28".
It was only the 2nd year for Camaro and the Z28. They LOVE road-racing in Canada.
Excuse me, I have to go pick more nits and fight some ignorant folks about "Porche-ah" or Porche".

If you listen to the CD that comes with the car, they refer to it as a: "Zee Six" I found it REALLY annoying. I have only ever heard it referred to as "Zee Ohh Six." (Although it is actually a Zero.)
Thank goodness we are not in the UK. We would be driving: "Zed Naught Six."
