How did the Z06 name originate ? Did they have a performance version years ago in a six-cylinder configuration ?

Yes, 1963. And GM brought back the Z06 rpo to denote the high performance fixed roof coupe introduced in '01.

It’s just a simple G. M. RPO code. A "Z" code usually indicates a special package.
Z-71 “off road” package for Silverados. Z-28s for high end Camaros. Z-26 for Brettas, among other GM models.
Corvettes have had a lot of “Z” codes through the years.
Z-06, ZR-1 and Z-07 have been used twice. Z4Z is used for Indy Pace Car packages. There was even a Corvette ZR-2 in 1971, but it was latter used on S-10/blazers in recent years.
