Anybody hack the nav yet?

Haven't done much with it yet; but it does badly need fixing and I'd be happy to help with working on it.
The nav has a speed input, it uses that and yaw input for "dead reckoning" navigation. This provides better precision than GPS alone and allows it to work during GPS dropouts. So it probably uses this same input to decide the car's moving, and it probably won't navigate very well if you disconnect it.
There are a few known easter eggs for similar radios but they don't work on this one.
The software apparently is in flash, not on the DVD so the first step is figuring out how to access that. Probably through the class 2 bus, but how to dump / reflash it isn't going to be obvious from that. Need time to take the thing out and poke at it.
We might know a little more after the radio fixes are applied. Rumor has it that this can be done through a disc, but I'm betting it's a flash. But seeing how this is done might help provide clues.

And my other radios, radar detector, other ECM, etc. Or maybe the HUD would be better for that. But we know the nav talks to the HUD, so it's all much of a muchness.
Theoretically, there's lots of stuff that could be done with the hardware that's there. The aviation maps (and playing DVDs, mobile WiFi, BlueTooth, etc.) would most likely take extra hardware; not sure if this can be added or not.
It might be possible to interface to it and get at least low-speed data through the class 2 bus, that would handle weather maps, web browsers, etc. Then the other processing could be handled by a Gumstick or something tucked away behind the panel.
The nav probably has some sort of rudimentary operating system. My guess would be MS Windows CE due to the long time it takes to boot up, but Linux or Wind River is possible. In any case, there's probably some sort of framework in place there.
It is worth noting that a lot of the functionality is not in software - for example, the radio starts playing long before the nav boots up to the point where the controls work. The DVD seems to start before it's finished booting too, which sort of makes me wonder about the story about MP3s not working due to software codec problems. Or maybe the codec runs on a DSP, not on the control processor. More stuff to figure out.

I would settle for it getting me to the right location for a change....this is the worst nav. unit I have ever used.A lot of the times it can't find where I want to go,or if it does its the wrong direction.

If you don't have a GPS and are thinking about it....take a good look at the Garmin C3XX line.

The NAV software is updated through the DVD player. I watched the engineer at the C5/C6 Bash update the software on my unit.
There is also a debug/diag screen you can access by holding your finger on a point at the top of the screen. after 5 seconds, a virtual keypad comes up and depending on what code you enter, settings are visable/open to change. for example, one code will let you only view most of the settings, another will let you view all of the settings, and still a third will let you start changing the settings. i asked the engineer if there was a way to turn off the lockout feature this way and he replied no. I also asked about MP3 playback and some sources being louder than others. His response was that the levals of the sources were set in the compiled software and the mp3 playback capability will be comming soon.
My car is currently in the shop, so i cant fiddle around with the nav to find the exact location of the spot and report back, but i do remember it was at the top of the settings screen (90% sure) just to the left or right of the words at the top. if anyone wants to poke aroudn their nav tonight and report back, it woudl be appreciated.

Don't reinvent the wheel...
To get all the above, you rip out the NAV and install a 7" touch screen and PC-Carputer.
Run WindowsXP with:
GPS
Nationwide wireless internet access card
GOOGLE maps
satellite navigation software
DVD movie playback
MP3 albums
email
IM chat (of course, only for your passenger if the car is moving!)
