Calling Dave Salvatore
Maybe Dave Salvatore can answer that one. I heard conflicting reports of it's availability. Are you there Dave?

Are you serious? Should I make a whole list or just hit the high points?
If we were talking about listening on Macintosh amps with studio monitors in my livingroom, I could understand your "lossy" arguement. But...
1) we're listening in what is probably the worst/most hostile listening environment possible... a moving car.
2) we're listening on equipment that's, well, "less than optimal" at sound reproduction in the first place (and that's being kind).
3) we're not really doing any "critical listening" here, are we? I'm not anyway, I'm driving... I just want to be entertained.
Anyway, at least for me, my point is in a moving car, on the audio equipment found in your "average" system, I would hazard to say that 99.9% of people couldn't tell "Lossless" CD-Audio from a "lossy" compressed MP3 as long as it's well encoded, e.g. high-bitrate (192Kbps or better). Nor is the average commuter paying enough attention to the music to notice the difference anyway.
Under those circumstances, the appeal to me is 100+ songs on one CD in my hand.
