NEED HELP!!! Oil capacity of LS2
I just had my first oil change at local Chevy dealer. First thing I notice on the invoice is "6.5 quarts". I thought I had read that the new LS2 only took 5.5 quarts. Dipstick also looks fairly high; about an inch of oil above the criss-crossed lines on the stick. I refused to take the car until they drained the extra quart. Technician insists it calls for 6.5 quarts. I don't think I'm wrong. I don't have the owner's manual in front of me, but I thought it said 5.5 quarts in there also. PLEASE GIVE ME THE CORRECT ANSWER OR A LINK TO IT.
THANKS

Its pathetic that these service depts. don't know these things. I specifically checked because I seem to recall a few posts where a bunch of people have gotten their oil levels over-filled. "Certified Corvette Technician" my a%$.

5.5 quarts is correct. The tech is thinking of the C-5 which did take 6.5. Some have reported putting in as much as 6 quarts to fill the 05/06. I've done 3 oil changes on my 05, Z-51, and it usually reads full at something between 5.5 and just under 6 quarts.

I'd rather have them put in the 5.5 quarts. I can always go buy a quart of Mobil 1 and titrate the level as needed. Don't want it overfilled though! I just read a link that clearly states that the new LS2 uses a wingless pan design to help with oil starvation and that the pan capacity is one quart less than the old LS1.

The Bottom Line
I had the same experience where 7 qts. of oil was put into my car. For me, it has always been a Bottom Line thing. I will always check the dipstick myself to make sure the oil level is right as the top of the hash section or the third hole up from the bottom of the stick. When I called attention to the high oil level to the dealership, they put the car back on the rack and removed the extra oil ----- And adjusted my bill.
At this point, I don't really care if the capacity if 5.5 (which is what the manual says) or the 6 qts. that many have said the Z51 car takes. I have a Z-51 car and right now the oil level is right where I said above. Is it 5.5 or 6 quarts ?????
I'm comfortable in knowing that the level is correct.

Lots of threads on oil capacity. Seems that 5.5 Quarts w/filter for a change is correct BUT the overall capacity is 6 Quarts. If you were starting with a new motor that never had oil it takes 6 Qts. to fill it, if you are CHANGING the oil it takes 5.5 Qts since the oil cooler and lines won't drain.

Owner's manual, page 5-94, doesn't say anything about Z51 - see below.
Engine Oil with Filter 5.5 quarts
All capacities are approximate. When adding, be sure to fill to the appropriate level, as recommended in this
manual. Recheck fluid level after filling

The Z-51 takes more oil because of the extra oil coolers and lines but that oil does not drain out so the amount of oil you put in is the same in Z51 and non Z-51 engines.

As everyone knows by now, this topic has been
I am also the naysayer to the 5.5 Qts. Yes the manual says 5.5 Qts. Yes most people do 5.5 Qts. and yes, most people say 5.5 Qts takes it to the full line. BUT, on my non Z51 C6, it takes 6 Qts when I do a full oil and filter change.
And besides, if and extra 1 Qt should be put in when racing the car, per GM, !/2 Qt over isn't going to hurt ANYTHING.
But your car may be different, try 5.5 Qts and see if you are full. Go with what feels good to you. 6 Qts feel right to me.
