Dealer Holdback

neither ... its seperate. It is for the dealer to keep, insure, and prep the automobile prior to sale. If you were allowed to see the entire invoice, you would see MSRP versus invoice, and then at the bottom the actual price paid for unit which is invoice minus 3%.

It's not printed on the invoice, it's extra money held back, hence the name hold back, from the manufacturer paid to the dealer. I don't even think invoice minus the holdback is the TRUE cost to the dealer as there are so many other factors.

holdback is 3% of the MSRP before the destination charge is added.
eg.
total vehicle and options $50000
destination charge $800
total $50800
holdback is 3% of $50000 or $1500.
same with advertising fees.
the percentage varies with region, but the amount is based on the $50000 in this example.
