Default Gas tank size...

I always thought that the size of the tank was 18 gallons. Well I let the tank get to where the needle was even with the bottom of the E mark on the gauge. Even still I filled it up and I couldn't get it past 15.5gallons. I have let it get low a few times and it's never taken more then 15 gallons. So my question is, is the gas tank on an A6 smaller then 18?

GM has built in a huge "reserve" into their fuel gage calibration for many years. Newer cars don't like to be run out of fuel. The C5 was the same was.

E generally leaves a couple/3 extra gallons. Every car I've ever owned is like that.

On my 2006 I ran it down to the middle of the red E line, took very nearly 17 gals to fill up so not as much reserve as i thought. Range was showing about 30 miles.

With a pump that keeps the level equal in the two tanks.

Never let it get below 1/4 of a tank, I'm not running out of gas & letting this car sit on the highway..........

isn't it bad for the fuel pump to let your tank get to its reserve?

I had this same question. I got my fuel gauge down to flat E (unintentionally) and it only took 16 gallons. I much prefer the C5 guage and warnings that had two levels, a "reserve" then a "low", and not this C6 invisible 2 gallons and only one warning very close to E.

The really sad part is that 16 gallon fill-up was the first time in my life filling my gas tank has cost me more than $50. On the bright side, with gas so expensive, its much better to enjoy bruning it.

Default Fuel Tank

Are you saying the fuel tank is two parts and when one goes dry there is a pump that moves the fuel to the other side?

This was written for C5's but it probably also applies to C6's.
