Default I need help tonight - please

I just noticed that the last oil change was done with 5W20 instead of 5W30 - is this a big issue?

Yes, I am anxious to hear what these guys say - I do not race the car, but I do run it to 5k after it is warmed up now and then.

I'd return the car to wherever you had the maintenance done, and make them change it again, using the correct weight oil. It could void your warrenty.

Don't worry about it, just have it changed when you return.

Might it be a typo? I don't believe that 5W20 is a very commonly used oil. Plus, it probably doesn't meet the GM requirement. Was this done at a GM dealer? Or, was it done at a quick lube?

Nope, not a type.

The bottlle says Mobile 1 Fully Synthetic - 5W20.

It was done at a Quick Lube and I didn't pay attention.

However, I got the last of some oil in his last bottle - that's how I know)

5W-20 is becoming more and more popular, and it does come in Mobil 1. Ford and I believe Honda started going that way, and I know Hyundai and others are now going with 5W-20 as well. Not that big of deal, can certainly drive with it. But if you want it corrected, just have them correct their mistake.

My son's F150 uses Mobile 1 5W20. I doubt it will hurt anything, but I'd get it changed to 5W30 when you get a chance.

I will be interesting to see if you get better than normal gas mileage on your trip because of the lighter oil. I'm betting it won't make much difference...

for a long duration at high loads (tracking, racing, high speed driving over 120 mph for long periods of time, that type of thing) high engine temps may make a difference (above conditions only)

under normal driving - stripping down (taking apart to check) the motor i don't think you could tell the difference.... engine temps don't get that high......

I'm not a rocket scientist - just built a lot of engines through the years

first chance you get have them change it..... no big deal.... have a good trip!!

The lower weight oils are generally used in areas with cool or colder weather to keep the oils from getting too thick. Unless you plan to operate you vehicle at very high temperature levels, there should be no concern.

I don't think it will hurt a thing, it may use a little. You might want to check the oil level a little more often.

I wouldn't even let most dealers change my oil, even on my Honda, let alone a Quick Lube.
I don't know if it'll hurt anything, but I would get it changed as soon as possible since these things run so hot. I'm curious what your oil temp and pressure read when warm upped now, as compared to before with 5W30.

I would suggest that it depends on where you live and the type of trip. If it is going to be hot and you will be climbing hills, winding roads, etc. I would change it - probably more because it would bother me the whole trip than any real difference it will make, but the 20w will get thinner at higher engine temps than you would want.

I would take a chance with my wife but not my Corvette. I would change it forthwith.

This is what Mobile says about it. Protects up to 400 degrees F.

Mobil 1 5W-20
This viscosity is recommended for most Ford and Honda vehicles since the 2001 model year. It is also the viscosity grade being recommended for many Chryslers beginning with the 2005 model year.
Mobil 1 5W-20 meets:
ILSAC GF-4 energy conserving viscosity that flows quickly during cold starts.
API SM/CF
ACEA A1/B1
Ford WSS-M2C930-A
Mobil 1 5W-20 complements a lineup of Mobil 1 products that are engineered to help keep your engine running like new. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology exceeds the industry's toughest standards and outperforms all conventional motor oils. It offers exceptional performance under all operating conditions, pours at temperatures as low as -53°F (-47°C) and protects at oil temperatures as high as 400°F (205°C). Specifically designed for Ford, Honda and 2005 Chryslers where an SAE 5W-20 is recommended.

For more information, see the Mobil 1 5W-20 Product Data Sheet.
