Default Something new to get used to…

It’s been about 25 years since my last vette. Back then I was young, with a flashy car (vette was a brilliant yellow) in a small town. I had those Hooker headers and hooker side pipes, so my vette was LOUD. It could be heard from blocks and often times, miles away, kinda like a boat with open headers on the lake. Needless to say, I was constantly hounded by the cops and had to be careful every time I drove. I still got tons of tickets with it.

Fast forward to the current time. My new vette is Lemans blue and totally stock. This past weekend I drove from the San Francisco bay area to Los Angeles and back, the first “big” trip in the vette. The speed limit on the 5 freeway is 70 mph out in the middle of the state. I left real early and did hit speeds of over 100 mph twice, but only to stretch the car’s legs for a second. For the most part I set the cruise to 79 mph, and to 82 mph for a bit, but 90% of the time cruise was at 79.

So as I’m driving along in the slow lane at 79, I see a plainclothes CHP on an overpass. I disengage the cruise, and let my speed fall to 75 and reset it. He flies down the onramp, snuggles in behind me, and stays there for the better part of 100 miles. He never turned on his lights and never got real close, but stayed close and stayed on me. All the while, people are passing us in the fast lane going well over 80, probably in the range of 85 or so.

On the trip home yesterday, I decided I didn’t what to be hassled at all, so I stayed at no more than 5 over the limit though LA, then once I got out on 5, I set the cruise to 79 and left is there. No jaunts to the upper limits. On the way home I get off the 5 and take a secondary route to my area. The limit on this road is 65, then 55, then 50.

One area I know of is heavily patrolled. So I set the cruise to 67 in the 65 zone. Sure enough there’s a CHP parked on the other side of the road. At this location it’s a four lane highway with a median in between. But the guys’ stopped, doing paperwork or something. I watched him as I drove by, with all sorts of cars around me and passing me. Slowly but surely he fads out of view and it looks like he’s staying parked. But I’m not that stupid. Another minute or less goes by and her he comes… like a bat out to hell. I disengaged my cruise and set it right on 65. Again, he slows right now and snuggles in behind me, real close this time.

The road narrows and the limit goes to 55. I dropped my speed to 55 and he stayed right on my fanny for the next 30 or so miles until the road drains into another freeway. As he was following me, I saw some flashing “school zone” lights and slowed to 25 per the law… and the CHP just about rear ended me... he was so focused on harassing me that he wasn’t paying attention.

So, is this still pretty common for most of you out there? Being followed “unreasonably” by the cops? Let me know, I’m curious. I guess it’s time to get a radar detector.

Best,
Lemans

No, it doesn't happen to me.
Check your license plate, does it say "FUCOP". J/K

Nah, I have pretty good luck with cops, they never bother me.

I have only had one encounter where it was obvious I was being followed by the police merely for driving a VY C6. He finally got bored when I wouldn't go over the speed limit & bailed after a while. There have been other times that I thought the police were checking me out a little, but only one time where I felt like I was being singled out & followed around as I drove through town.

No, it doesn't happen to me either and I'm having a hard time believing other cars were passing the CHP's car at 80 while following you.

Usually what happens is the LEO is doing the speed limit and nobody wants to pass him for fear of a ticket and you get a bottleneck behind him.

I have a VY Convertible, and the local police follow me all over town. I usually take the long way around, just to give them something to do. My wife got a ticket when she entered a median 20 feet too soon to make a left turn. The first in her life.

I guess police have the same interest in cars that I have for beautiful women.

Yeah that has happened before and they get bored driving behind me since I will drive 5 mph less than the stated speed limit.

No problems from cops yet.

My wife back in 92 (when she was my girlfriend) bought a new Z28. It was when they came out with the last body style. It was one of the first if not the first Camaro in our area.

One night while leaving my parents house (where I lived) at about 2AM after watching movies and TV, she got pulled over. The cop questioned her about who's car it was and said she failed to stop in the highways median. There is no stop sign there and no law requiring a stop.

The cop told her to go to court and she would get out of it, but gave her the ticket anyways... What a jerk... She was unable to go to court because of finals and had to pay the ticket.

But the point is the cop pulled her over purely because of the car she was driving. And had no reason to really...

No issues like this ever, been driving Vettes for 12 years.
But Vettes are a rather common sight in my city and import racers are the ones that cause the troubles here.

Luckily, I haven't had to deal with that much around here.
But I HAVE had the exact same thing happen a couple times elsewhere.
Mostly, I'm constantly being passed by others on the road when the LEO decides to check me out. I've never been the fastest guy around when it's happened. I wonder WHY a cop would do that? Running my plate? Trying to spook me?
If any LEOs have any ideas, I'd be glad to hear 'em. Just mindin' my own business, here. Curious, though.

Odd that this would happen twice on the same trip?

Maybe stop detailing the new car so much!

He was in one of those all white cars... not even the all white CHP... but he did have his laptop running and those real small lights inside. Several times as people passed us, you'd see a blip of the brake lights... but that was it. they'd continue on and my buddy and I would stay together at 75...

That's what I was thinking.... there's no plates on the car as it's still new, so it just has the dealership nameplate license.

well, I too am a slow learner on some things... the third exwife is on the way! However, I don't like getting pulled over at all.. so I'm just gonna try to hit the cruise control every chance I get... fact of the matter is though.. police DO hassle vette drivers.

I have not been hasseled. Howver, I have been approached by cops outside of Chicago if I am at a rest stop or gas station who have come over and wanted to talk to me about the car. Always a pleasant experience, especially if the cop is or was a former Vette owner.

It's happened to me a couple of times and in each case, after a prolonged period of riding my bumper, I've pulled into a rest area with the cruiser behind me.

Since I'm a former police officer as well, I'm not shy about chatting with the brethren politely - - in both cases, the officer started off thinking they were going to get a pinch, and ended up just cruising and admiring the car.

I have never been harassed in 13,000+ miles.

That's probably because I drive a classy Monterey Red Vette instead of that flashy LeMans Blue.

The LEO probably almost rear ended you because he was playing with his computer. I see them doing that all the time while they're driving these days. One that I was behind the other day was driving so eratically (and breaking traffic laws in the process) that if I hadn't seen him tapping on the keyboard through the rear window I would have sworn he was drunk!
