Default Programing the new 08 Fob?

I have a 2007 and I just got the new 08 fobs.

I went through the procedure (I think) where I open the hatch with the key and turn it 5 times in 5 seconds, then insert the new fob in the glovebox.

It seemed like it worked, I mean it showed "fob 3" - "fob 4" then it showed max fobs learned.

I did not here any horn honks or have to wait 10 minutes......

The fob mostly works -

It starts the car and the buttons work for lock, unlock and trunk open.

it's just when I push "options" on the DIC, it says something like "no options" and when I walk away from the car, it will not lock.

Any ideas?

thanks,
John

Only fob nos. 1 & 2 can have memory options. All fob nos. 3 & 4 are allowed to do is start the car. I think they may also lock/unlock the car with the buttons on the fob. That's about it.

2007 owner's manual, page 232.

If a keyless access transmitter that is not
labelled 1 or 2 is used, the personalization system
will not recognize the transmitter. The Driver
Information Center (DIC) will not display a current
driver number and the features that are normally
programmed through the DIC will be set to
the default states. Also, if the OPTION button is
pressed, the DIC does not display the menus used
to set personalizations, but instead displays
OPTIONS UNAVAILABLE for a few seconds.

Hi,
I, too, have a 2007 C6. When I purchase a new 2008 fob which I'd like to program as fob #1, the way I read the instructions, I need to use the long procedure. Correct ?

I insert the new fob first. It then becomes #1. At that point, both my existing transmitters will no longer function until I continue the sequence and reprogram them as #2 and #3. Correct ? This is from page 77, 78 of the 2007 manual.

Has anyone tried this? Since I want to be able to use my existing DIC programming for #1, I'd like to program my new fob to be #1 instead of #3 or #4.

Comments?
Thanks,
Steve

I just read the pages in the 2007 manual (actually, pages 76 & 77) and that's the way I read it. However, I have not tried it with my 06.

You are absolutely correct. There is only one caveat, however. Before you initiate the long procedure, make sure that your original/recognized fobs are a good distance away from your car. If the car detects any original/recognized fobs, it will assume that you only want to add additional fobs 3 and/or 4 to your system.

When your car does not detect any recognized fobs, it will then allow you to start the long procedure.

When it finally programs your new 2008 fob, you can then bring your original fobs and program them as fobs 2 & 3, if you so desire.

If you are programming 2 of the new fobs as 1 and 2, after the long countdown on the dic the first one is programmed, so do you insert the number 2 fob and do the same procedure again for the second? If that is correct, then I assume that you can do the old fobs using the short method to add them as 3 and 4. Thanks for the info.

If you are using the "long countdown" method, after the first unrecognized fob ('08 fob) is programmed, it will continue to ask you for additional fobs, up to a total of four. In other words, you can program them all at once. You do not have to keep repeating the long procedure for each fob.

OK, I'm sorta kinda confused.

I would like to purchase one new #1 08 fob and use that to replace the current #1 fob. I want to continue to use the current 07 #2 fob.

I use the current #1 fob to get into the car. Then do I remove the current #1 fob from the area, stick the new 08 #1 fob in the slot and do the long procedure?

Additionally, the long procedure - this is three ten minute cycles for that one fob, right?
-----------------------------------------------------------

So after I get the new 08 fob programmed to the #1 fob position, then what? Do I have to reprogram my existing #2 fob or will it still work?

Many thanks!

Mike

You've got it exactly right...but you will also have to remove your original #2 fob from the area otherwise the car will detect it and not allow you to do the long procedure.

After the three 10 min cycles, it will program the new '08 fob which will be in the slot. Then the DIC will ask you for fob #2, which you'll need to reprogram. You can then program two more fobs (you can use up to a total of 4 fobs). You do not have to repeat this long process for each fob that you want programed - you can do 4 fobs in succession as the DIC calls for them.

If you wanted to use your original #1 fob as a spare, you could reprogram it as fob #3, although it would not have any personalization associated with it.

I have a 07 C6 and followed the long procedures and programmed the 08 remotes to be 1 & 2, worked fine. Question...has anyone actually had the 08 key cut to mat the 07 C6. I have tried a few dealers and they haven't had any luck. They tried with my key code and the actual key I have. The issues seems to be the 08 key is not as wide as the 07 key. Any ideas??

I did the same. I purchased just one 08 Fob. I made it my #1 and programed the 07 #2 fob to remain as such. I'm still waiting for the key to arrive from Gene. I didn't realize they were two different parts! He assures me that it will fit the 07 key cylinder.

My local Chevy dealer said their key machine will only do up to 2007 keys. I got out the phone book and found another dealer that said they could do an 08. I'll find out next week when I get the key in the mail.

I PM'd a guy on the forum last week that had posted a thread on this. I asked were he got his key cut in the Phoenix area, he never returned my PM. I will defenitly post my results when I get it all done. I know there are several people out there like us who still haven't got all the info on this.

The 07 and 08 lock cylinders are the same, therefore the key should work.

Hi,
I just got my new 2008 fob and key blank. I called my dealer, MacMulkin and spoke with the service manager, Scott. He said he will cut the key for me, no charge, though they have never cut a 2008 key to match a 2007 key. But he said they'd try it. I'll bring the instructions that came with the key.

The key seems to be a bit thiner than the 07 key.

He also said that he can program the fob for me with their scanner. That would save me the 30/long minute procedure, since I do want to make this new fob, the #1 fob and then I can reprogram my other fobs and #2 and #3.

Question: When they program the fob with the scanner and make it #1, does that render my original fobs unusable until I reprogam them or will they still work as #1 and #2?

Perhaps this is new unchartered territory.
Thanks folks,
Steve

If you are doing the long procedure, make sure to attend to the car and not let it time out!

I made the mistake of walking away during the last 10 reset minute cycle. When I came back out 20 minutes later, the car had gone into shutdown (battery save) mode from inactivity. At this point, all known fobs were erased and I could not program the new ones since you must start the car and then shut it down to begin the learning process. The car had to be towed to the dealer where they were able to reprogram the car via software interface.

My local dealer cut mine in less than 5 minutes, no problems and best of all no charge.

Hey jdurhan (or anyone),

Did your dealer cut the key by using the vin# or by copying the old wider key?

I just came from my local dealer which said that the key was narrower than the key I had so it wouldn't work. I then went to a good locksmith who told me the same thing.

I live in Miami, Florida but I'd be willing to drive to Ft. Lauderdale to get it cut, I'm considering going up to Gene's dealer but that may be too far. :-)

my keys were also cut with no problem.

I still need to somehow delete the original 2 "07" fobs and I guess the new "08" fobs that I programed as number 3 and 4

Do I need to have a dealer do that?

Check out Facade-07's post above.

Basically keep your current fobs away from your car and follow the instructions on the link Gene provided which are from our owner's manual. You'll need about 40 minutes to do it so make sure you have some time when you start.

There's two ways to add fobs in the manual. You have to follow the second way which seems to be mandatory in Canada.
