Default C6 Canadian bumper install (with pics)

I picked up an '07 in the States last week, and brought it for the Canadian bumper conversion on Saturday.
My friend Luc Lefebvre owns a high end body shop just outside Montreal called Le Carrossier, he has worked on many Corvettes new and old over the years (including my '62).
For my '07, his senior guy Daniel did the front, and I basically handled the back. Total time was just under three hours, but Dan had the front finished quite a bit before that.

Here are some pics, with descriptions.

Here you can see the two Canadian SPEC foam beams that must be installed along with the extensions and reinforcements (not shown yet). I had picked up all the parts at Fred Beans in PA last summer on my way to Carlisle. Total cost then was $450 US.

They each show their specific Canadian part number, with the "CAN" designation. We could see no other differences between the rear pads, but as I'll show, the fronts are not quite the same.

Here you can clearly see the extra material used on the US version to take the place of the extensions that are used on the Canadian version.

Here is my car after Dan had removed the front cover and US spec pad. I didn't time him, but I would guess that it took him less than an hour to get to this point. Having the car on the lift sure helped both of us.

Here you can see the front extension pieces.

Here is an extension in place, but not bolted in yet.

Next we move to the rear, and as you can see the pads look identical, but for the part numbers.

Here you can see Dan sliding one of the rear reinforcements in.

Here you can see the pass side reinforcement installed and held by the three bolts.

And here you see the back end with everything installed and the cover ready to go back on.

All in all a straightforward job, done in under three hours with two people. Many thanks to "codename Bil Doe" for this excellent post on removing the rear bumper cover. I had printed it and referred to it while working on the car. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ghlight=bumper

so when will be see this on someones "mod list" for their American C6 ?

What exactly do the bureaucrats in Canada think this extra stuff buys the occupants in terms of safety and security?

Silly I know, but our bumper laws are 5MPH, and the US spec Vette is only rated at 2.5MPH. Apparently adding these parts makes it 5MPH crash worthy. All I know is that my car has now been inspected, passed and plated!

Default 5 mph bumpers for Canada

Thanks for the Great Pictures and write up on installion of Canadian 5 mph bumpers. Good Luck with your new Corvette.
GM should smarten up and use only the Canadian 5 mph standard (all Corvettes). It would save a ton of money by having not all the different part numbers (also all the different bumper parts) for the North American market Corvettes. Looks like the bean counters over looked a big saving in
Corvette production. Or is this the excuse to charge so much more for Canadian Corvettes ? Save the Wave.>George

Thanks for posting the pics I have always been interested in what little differences actually exist between the two bumbers.

Great post!

This definetly should be stickied for Canadian Vette owners buying U.S.
vettes, as so many of us are now doing.

Great job and excellent write-up. I was under the impression that the change had to be done by GM dealer and the work order original had to be presented to get the car licensed in Canada.

You can have the work done at the garage of your choice, as long as you have the completed detailed work order as proof. You also need the itemized invoice from a GM dealer for the parts.

I would have bought the parts, gotten a bill, paid my friend a hundred or two to make up a work order then sold the parts. Bumper regulations like this are ridiculous and a huge waste of time and money

Don't know what you'd get for the parts without the original invoice? I didn't want any potential hassles down the road, so I just did it by the book.

Thanks for those great pics and fantastic explanation. I am just new to the forum and obviously this thread. I am planning on purchasing a U.S. 2007 Z06 ... are the bumper parts the same to do the Canadian conversion for both vettes?

Thanks

Great writeup and glad I could help out. Ridiculous that you have to go through all that for a piece of support. When was the last time someone drove 5mph much less 2.5?

Thanks again Bill for the great how-to on the rear cover removal! I just printed it out and followed your steps.
