The vette nav system is very picky about MP3s, to say the least. In a nutshell, if you follow these guidelines (from the Nav Manual), you will be okay:

MP3 Format

When creating an MP3 disc, the following is a list
of guidelines. If the customer does not follow
these guidelines when recording a CD-R(W), the
CD may not play.

• ID3 tag information is displayed by the radio if
it is available. The radio supports ID3 tag
information v1.0 or v1.1. The radio will display
a file-name, song name, artist name, album
name, and directory name.

• Maximum 29 characters, including spaces, in
a file or folder name. (Note: 25 characters in the song title + 4 characters in the file extension - .MP3.
Also eliminate any non-standard characters [e.g., tildes(~) and accents]).

• Maximum number of folders is 500 with
500 files with a maximum hierarchy of
eight folders. It is recommended to keep the
depth of folders to a minimum in order to keep
down the complexity and confusion in trying
to locate a particular folder during playback.

• Create a folder structure that makes it easy to
find songs while driving. Organize songs by
albums using one folder for each album. Each
folder or album should contain 18 songs
or less.

• The files can be recorded on a CD-R or
CD-RW with a maximum capacity of 700MB.

• DVD with MP3 are not playable on this system.

• The radio will not play a mixed mode CD-R/
RW, a disc recorded with both *.cda and
*.mp3 files.

• The player will support a disc with multiple
sessions, but it is not required that the disc be
finalized. It is recommended to record the disc
all at once.

• Recording format mode 2 or mode 2XA with
Romeo or Joliet file system is not supported
with this player.

• All applicable Mode 1 recording formats are
supported.

• MPEG 2.5 is not supported with this player. File
formats MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 with all bit rates
(including variable) except less than 16kbps are
supported with this player.

• Long files or folder names or a combination of a
large number of files and folders may cause the
player to be unable to play up to the maximum
number of files or folders or affect the reading
speed and time to play.

My first few partly sucessful attempts to burning MP3 CDs for my Vette resulted in some of the songs getting skipped, but I didn't have any songs that were repeated.

What I did to solve the skipping tracks was to edit the file names of the tracks to limit them to 31 characters, and remove special characters that were not alphabetic characters, numeric characters, or spaces.

You're symptoms (missing songs and repeats of following songs where the missing ones should be) are exactly what you get with long file names or illegal characters in the filename. Only one problem with Facade's advice - the manual is wrong. 32 characters never work for me. 30 and 31 work occasionally. 29 or less have never failed. Also, we are talking about the real filename and not the name that shows on the display or the name that ITunes shows. The display shows the internal ID3 tag and ITunes adds characters to the name it shows.

The best program I've found for bulk changing file names is A.F.5 ( http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm ). You're next post will be that now they play but the display isn't right and that is because the ID3 tags are version 2.x rather than 1.x. The program to easily fix that is ID3-TagIT ( http://www.id3-tagit.de/ ).

One other problem with the manual. It says "File formats MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 with all bit rates (including variable) except less than 16kbps are supported with this player" That is a half truth. Variable bit rates play MOST of the song but will quit early and may not play what you expect if you use fast forward or reverse. I would never use VBR. The program for changing VBR to fixed bit rates is Lame ( http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php ).

Actually, the manual is correct:

• Maximum 32 characters, including spaces, in
a file or folder name. (Note: 28 characters in the song title + 4 characters in the file extension - .MP3.
Also eliminate any non-standard characters [e.g., tildes(~) and accents]).
28 characters is the maximum allowed length for the song title (including spaces). Add that to 4 characters in the file extension (.MP3), give you a total of 32 characters. Only the song title is displayed, not the file extension.

Sorry, but in my experience it is not. 25 + 4 or 29 total is the limit I use that works. 30 and 31 sometimes work and 32 never works. I created at least a dozen discs testing theories on what works and what doesn't and 25 ( + 4) always worked and 28 ( + 4 ) never worked. I never found the reason why 26 and 27 sometimes worked and sometimes with identical track filenames didn't. I'm sure it was some interaction with the other filenames that I couldn't discover but since 25 always worked...

It is also logical that the limit would be less than 32 since the version 1.x ID3 tags which are used to display the title/artist/album have a physical limit of 30 characters and not 32. http://www.id3.org/ID3v1

Bottom line - get the ID3 tags in version 1.x rather than the version 2.x that all modern programs want to use and you won't have a problem with the display of title/artist/album. Use filenames longer than 25 +".mp3" at your own risk. Some may work but don't complain to me if you find that some don't. Never use VBR unless you don't mind losing the last few seconds to minutes of the songs and don't mind never being confident what the fast forward and reverse will do ( you can fast forward and end up before where you started ) That's my hard earned advice and I'm sticking to it.

Filenames and ID3 tags are two different animals. I am talking about "filenames". They are limited to 32 characters including spaces and file extensions.
"Filenames" minus the file extension is what the nav uses to create the list of MP3s on the CD. ID3 tags are used on the nav screen to display the track/artist/album information.
I too have created many MP3 CDs and titles with up to 28 characters are not a problem. Whatever works for you is great. What works for me is exactly what the Nav manual recommends.

The mp3 player in the NAV in my C6 vert is also finicky about what it will play. Here's what I have found that works for me. My system is a little convoluted and uses three different software programs, but it works for me.

First, I rip the original analog CD using Windows Media Player. That gets the songs on my computer in mp3 format. Then, I create a playlist and burn an intermediary CD using iTunes. If I try to play that CD in the car, the car loses about a third of the songs. For example if I burn 115 songs on the disk, the car will find about 76 of them. The other 39 songs are just missing from the car's playlist. But, if I copy that intermediary CD to a separate folder on my computer and then use Nero to burn those same 115 songs to another CD, this final CD plays just fine and all of the songs appear in the playlist.

I'm sure there are other methods of making mp3 CDs that work and most of them are probably easier to do, but this works for me.

Just thought I'd write in with the process I use to burn MP3s to a CD for use in the Nav unit CD player - after making many many 'coasters' trying to get the right method - the Nav Manual just doesn't include enough detail for burning, and as many posters have already said, the Nav system CD player is VERY picky about what it can play. Obviously other people may have other ways of getting MP3s to play on the Nav unit, but this works for me, and since it was sooooo frustrating to get it to work I thought it worth to detail my process.

For info, I use Nero 7 to burn MP3s to CD, (www.ahead.de) and it works like a charm. I also use Tag&Rename (www.softpointer.com) to ensure that the ID3 tags are all setup correctly and that the v1 tags are the same as the v2 tags. Other MP3 tagging software should be able to do the same without any problems, including iTunes, WMPlayer, etc.

When you go into Nero Burning ROM (I don't use the Wizards, etc. in Nero Express since it doesn't give enough ISO-level control), on the 'New Compilation' screen select type 'CD' (if not already selected) and then choose 'CD-Rom (ISO)'.
Going through the tabs:
Multisession: select 'No Multisession' - even though I have read other comments that the Nav unit supports it.
ISO: this is the key tab. For 'Data Mode' select Mode 1, for 'File System' select 'ISO 9660 Only', for 'Filename Length' select 'Max of 31 chars (Level 2)' and 'Character Set' select 'ISO 9660 (standard ISO CD ROM)'. Make sure all the 'Relax Restrictions' check boxes are unchecked.
Burn: ensure that the 'Finalize CD (No further writing possible)' checkbox is checked.
The other tabs ('Label', etc.) are not important.
Click on 'New' to create the new compilation, and then drag and drop the relevant MP3s/Folders across onto the CD. You'll notice that all spaces and '-' marks in the folder/song titles convert to underscorses, but this doesn't affect how the song titles will appear on the Nav screen since it uses ID3 tags.
The burn the CD by clicking on the 'Burn' icon and away you go!
