Corvette is NOT a cold weather car

Sorry to hear about this. The damage really stinks.
This is a clear cut case of driver error though. I've driven mine in temperatures below zero and it does just fine. You just have to know the limitations of the tires at those temperatures.
Good luck on the repairs.

Why didn't the active handling kick in and save the day here?

Active handling can't overcome the laws of physics.
My suspision especially since we're talking about a shift from 3rd to 4th is that the car was being driven outside it's limits for the conditions.
Not even active handling will be able to completely overcome a slide if the car is to far off axis.

Are you sure you didn't hit some ice? I drove mine today and got on it pretty hard a couple of times with no issues with traction. Not as cold as your place but in the 30s.
Sorry about your car - glad you are OK!

Know limitations of the tires + be able to catch the rear end if you break traction.
I'm not a professional High Performance driver or anything, but i can make the rear end break loose like crazy and catch it before i hurt myself/ the car.

I used to say you buy em to drive em. I had every intention of driving it all winter as long as the roads were clear. NO MORE. Accelerating onto the highway, shifted from 3rd to 4th, and broke traction. Next thing Im sideways heading for a guard rail. Supercar tires are crap in the cold. Never Again. Im fine, just a lump on the head.
Hmm maybe time for the Z06 bumper and fenders.

I'm sorry man.
Once you get below about 40 degrees on the Eagle F1 Supercar EMTs they do not handle it well.
I am looking at unmelted snow on the ground. I know its too late now, but thats a solid indication that you should not drive it, and if you do, then you have to excercise extreme caution, much more than usual, because of the low end torque these cars make.
That said, I have driven my Z06 in wether below 32*F, never with snow or ice on the ground however, but excercised extreme caution doing so.
Good luck with the repairs, and glad to hear that you weren't hurt too bad.

got a similar setup and I also drive my car in the cold.. Next year I'm buying some extra wheels and cold weather tires... I had my car do a 4 wheels drift at 50*.. Scared the poop out of me as I didn't expect it..
Lesson learned tho..

- Sorry about the accident, that is horribile.
- I am extremely happy you did not get badly hurt.
- I personally love the cold weather(as longas there is no salt or snow on the gournd) as the car really wakes up
-Time for a z06 front bumper, or better yet.. the full conversion?

Sorry to hear the accident
Good thing you are ok, sorry to hear that.
Yes, I think the Vette is only for clear weather car, especially due to its performance tires. This pretty much applies to all high performance sports car. I even read in one article of car and driver magazine, the Porsche GT3 is not supposed to be driven in rain due to its lack of traction during rain
