I just upgraded my three 3/4" holes to full 1". The sound is now perfect. I got 3 compliments on how good the exhaust sounded already. I have owned a performance shop for 8 years now and have easily installed 500 aftermarket exhaust systems and would compare the sound of this mod to the best of them.
I have an extra X pipe laying around that a customer that upgraded theirs never wanted back, I am going to install a pair of Quik Time Performance electric cutouts into it with their digital controller just for want I want some extreme sound. For now the sound from the 3 holes is perfect for everyday driving and highway, I will try and record some clips for you guys as soon as my wife gives up our new HD video camera for a minute.

This is a plan that I was thinking. I have a friend who does custom exhausts. After looking at the photos of the stock muffler, I want to take a 1 inch hole saw and drill in the center of the muffler and remove the fiberglass and then he can weld the circle back. Of course, I am away right now and I wont execute this plan til mid April. Duty calls.
PS I have the convertible so I really would like to hear my car instead of the sorry-*** sound system.

This sounds like the highly popular A&A mod C5 folks used (to include myself). It worked, sounded great and cost me about $75 (parts/labor).
Geez I'm dating myself.

This imho is a recycling option. Why buy more stainless steel when you have nice looking tips, stainless mufflers and a nice sound that just needs to be turned up a notch.
Its just a muffler. If you frag it up you can buy stock ones for next to nothing anyway.

I did this, same as 1" hole in exit pipe on page 7 and it works great! Just wanted a little more noise but not to much to be distracting when traveling down the road. I already had all the tools so it cost nothing!

Last night I added another hole, 3/4 inch, to each muffler above and to the side of the existing muffler tips.

Ok, so I took the plunge, I will preface this with the fact that I think 400hp is plenty, so i wasn't looking for any HP gain, just make my vette sound like its not a kia, so I did this muffler mod
Tools required:
Drill
1 1/2" Hole Saw
3/4" Hole Saw
8" #8 self tapping screws (I chose hex head)
2 - 2 1/4" round sheet metal patches
Optional:
Zinc primer
flat black paint
On the lift ready to start
Holes Cut, outter hole is a 1 1/2" the inner hole is 3/4"
Patches cut from the bedside of a '09 GMC,
Patches are painted with this
Self tappers being screwed in
Almost done
Scotchbrite
Final step, dupont satin bumper paint matches the stock perfectly
This mod is AWESOME, it cost me nothing, and I personally think it sounds better then many aftermarket exhaust...there is ZERO drone. It is not loud like the stingers or bullets, but its not quiet like stock, best of all its wife approved.
Ease: 1/10 Super easy
Results: 10/10
Hope this helps anyone who is thinking about it.

Nice job! And the best thing about it is that the inner hole can start small and then be enlarged a little at at time until it gets just the right loudness....
Great pics too...thanks!

Valpovetteguy, Thanks for Sharing
Thanks for the pics and also would like a sound clip if possible, So after drilling the 2 holes per muffler, you patch the outer and are good to go? The increase in sound is from the inner hole drilled correct? And you can adjust the sound by increasing the size of the inner hole, per individual taste, Thanks again all, Salt
Thank you to all the others posting here also, info is great
