Manual or Auto? Not sure what to order.
Hey guys,
I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a C-6, but I can't decide whether or not to get an auto or manual trans. I'm trying to watch my budget. If I get the auto then I can't afford the Dual mode exhaust. Any suggestions? Thanks

I'll give you my opinion so take it for what it's worth. I have an 07 6spd manual. It's my first Vette and I'm not one of those guys who thinks that a sports car should ONLY be a manual. After a year of ownership I was really considering a trade for an 08 auto. With the new LS3 and improvements to the auto trans I couldn't get it out of my head that maybe I wanted an auto (not that I don't like the manual but for some personal reasons). So this past Saturday I test drove an 08 auto non-Z51 but with the performance 2.73 ratio. After about 2 minutes driving it I knew an auto wasn't for me. It just wasn't the same driving experience. The car was fast and I ran it hard (no salesman just me & the misses) but in my opinion the manual is the only way to go. If you can my advice is to drive them both to see what you like but I say go with the manual.

If you *really* want the auto - get it... you can always change the exhaust later.
If you are unsure, and if you have had manual transmission cars before (and liked them) definitely get the manual! Nothing like a manual-transmission Corvette!

there is no right answer-i have a 997 turbo and have a 6 speed manual-but my c6 has an automatic. i am not a lover of the corvette stick, and i personally thought that the fast shifting automatic was the better choice in the vette. the trans is happy to continually rapidly downshift-i like it, and as a result, bought it over the manual. to me, it is a fun experience.

Manual IMO. Especially if it allows you to get the npp. I had a few guys tell me that I would regret having a manual tranny..........yeah right! I love the fact that I can put it in any gear I wish (within reason of course). I think it makes an already fun car even more fun to drive.

If you can drive an automatic, go with the auto by all means. Lots of guys don't have the skills required to drive an automatic well, but those who do can really make the car perform.

I just gotta get out & bang the gears through the twisty roads sometimes. I like having a manual, and working the clutch & shifter on a challenging road. Sooo much fun.

That's a tough one
I have an 05 6M and love it. However, the only reason I didn't get an automatic was the 05 was a four speed. Here's my opinion list of the pro's and cons.
Pro's of 6M:
1. More fun to Drive
2. Better Gas Mileage 1 mile per gallon
3. $1200 cheaper then auto, allows you a cheaper payment or more options
Con's of 6M:
1. No fun in traffic
2. Seems like they pulled the unit out of a farm truck, although I hear they've been improved(Heavy Clunky Throws, Noisey and won't go into first sometimes)
3. The auto is easier to drive fast, no missed gears.

Want to talk on the phone, hold your girls hand, enjoy the driving experience? Then go with the auto. Especially if you live in a densely populated area. The performance difference is so small I'm not sure any really exist. I remember my first race with a Vette. The guy pulled up next to me said nice car. Then asked if it was auto or manual. He laughed when I said auto. The light turned green and I blew him away. Typical non believer that he was we pulled up to another light. When it turned green I blew him away again. By the third light he just shrugged his shoulders. I will never understand the resistance to the auto. I guess the same resistance as the people that thought the PC would never catch on. Some people read to many of those euro-trash car mags that still think the auto is for old ladies. Most likely they are the type that cannot set the clock on their VCR. It's funny how some people cannot grasp on to technology.

If you ask me, there is only one choice. I can't stand driving any car with an auto transmission. It takes away a big part of the fun. Even my DD and my wife's car are stick shifts.

my two cents
First I'm a manual guy always had them the last 40 years. My C5 was a MN6 my Porsche is a 6 speed. My 08 C6 is a A6. The first week I was kicking myself for buying the A6, but I found I needed to learn how to use the A6. Once I got some seat time I found it to be more fun then my C5 was with a MN6. You really can't appreciate the A6 with just a quick test drive. I was able to put 70 miles on the car I bought on the test drive. This still was not enough and I almost walked on the car. The A6 is very capable, once the driver learns to use it. I'm sure as I have my car longer I will appreciate the A6 even more. I really like the A6 and would consider it again in my next Vette. After spending some time with the A6 I have found that a sports car can have an auto and be as much if not more fun than a stick is. The big problem is if you don't like the transmission you end up with, your stuck with it for some time. If you're willing to learn to drive the A6 I don't see how you could regret it. You can always add an exhaust at an other time when you have more to spend on the car. NPP is cool, but it's not the end all exhaust.

I have had both over the decades and come to the conclusion that manual is much more fun to drive as long as you are not in traffic. Stop and go is no fun.
The auto trans of today is really very good. I have one in a streetrod and while it is near-perfect I long for the ability to shift. I'm not sure if this is a generational thing in that older folks like manual while the auto is growing on the younger.
I think it depends if you want reliable and basic transportation or if you want the experience and grit that come with shifting.
Either way you win, I just think you win more with a manual.

I would get the manual unless you have to drive in traffic everyday or live in an area with lots of hills. I think it is more fun to drive. However when I had a manual in my C5, I could never take it to San Francisco which was a bummer.
