Alcantara (brand name); Ultra-Suede (brand name); are synthetic polyester microfibers manufactured by Dupont in various ounce weights per yard based upon the textile use, such as: upholstery, draperies, clothing etc.

The fabric weight used in automotive upholstery in the highest yarn weight per ounce per yard resulting in a very durable fabric that can sustain alot of wear unlike natural leather suede or nubuck leather.

This microfiber fabric is commonly used in upholstered home furnishings such as upholstered furniture and draperies.

In the automotive industry; it is commonly used for headliners, seat inserts, dash pads, steering wheels etc and has exhibited great wear properties and none of the fabric abrasion or shine that you refer to.

My BMW has a steering wheel made of alcantara. It feels great....it does wear out however. The places where it is on Arampl's car should be just fine and last a long time.
