Difference between Z06 shifter and Z51 shifter?
Hi guys...
If you can forgive the intrusion by a C5 guy, I'd love to find out what differences exist between the shifters found in the C6 Z06 vs. Z51. I'd like to put one of these into my C5Z but can't make an educated choice without more info. Thanks!

I can't tell you if there is a difference. I can tell you that the trans and possibly the shifter as well changed for the base C6 as of '08 (to TR-6060 from T-56). I'd say get a hold of either GM parts dept. or the Helms Manuals for both years/models and compare. You may be able to contact Gene Culley the GM parts fellow who is an indy vendor here on the left side of the page.

Notwithstanding any 'upgraded' model transmission with the 2008 models, the gearbox ratios are indentical in the Z06 and the standard C6 transmission (the non-Z51 option transmission). The Z06 and the standard C6 have a close ratio gearbox.
The wide ratio Z51 gearbox was designed for the parking lot autocross enthusiast. Some prefer the closer ratio gearing of the standard C6/Z06 and some prefer the Z51 option gearing. Which is best IMO depends on the application. All in all, the difference between the two isn't huge.

The Z51 shifter isn't any different from a stock C6. You have the stock and the Z06 shifter. The Z06 shifter is supposed to be a bit stiffer and have up to 35% less throw.

I didn't notice any difference in the throw at all between driving the two. In fact, the shifting itself wasn't much different feeling at all. The other difference is that the Z shifter uses brass (I believe) bushings vs the rubber ones in the non Z. The idea was that the Z shifter's were supposed to provide a firmer shift. The draw back is that the older ones (pre half year 2007 model year) had a rattle issue. If you are going to get a Z shifter, get an 08 shifter to avoid the chance of the rattle. Gene probably knows the part number differences.
