You mean to tell me the damned thing is active, whether or not you pay for it? You gotta be kidding me! So, it's like a little "tracking" device-----permanently, is that what you're saying?

Once your car is stolen, you might be able to call OnStar and pay the subscription fee. At that point they should be able to help locate your car.
Frankly, for the pennies a day OnStar costs, I think you're far better off just keeping the service active.

To activate On Star, you push the button on the rear view mirror and an operator answers and you give your information so that they know where to send the bill. Thats the activation process.
You push the button and an operator answers, in my book that means it's activated.

Best bet is to ask ON Star. Perhaps the question could be; if my car is stolen, and Onstar is not active at the time, can it be activated so as to locate the car? They may IF the car is in a location where they can reach it via the satellite.

Once the account is deactivated, the vehicle will have no OnStar related functions, including:
- Hands free phone
- Air bag deployment notification
- GPS location
- Emergency services
- Door unlocking

I wouldn't want to be the one standing in front of a judge and jury saying ...Yea I know where the stolen car is but you have to pay me to tell you.

Onstar was still reporting mileage and oil life on a monthly basis for my 05 Bonneville GXP long after I discontinued the Onstar service.

Onstar has absolutely NO value to me. YMMV

The new OnStar 8.0 on the 2009's can also throw a stolen car into reduced power mode. Or any car that the police don't like, I would surmise. Doesn't seem like the police would care if the OnStar bill was paid.

Bet you might think differently were you one of the many on the CF who have unfortunately locked their FOB inside the car I had a choice - On-Star or XM. Since I don't listen to the radio when driving, On-Star won. It costs money but hey, what else can I spend it on other then gas?

The legal issue would be more around air bag deployment. If an airbag goes off and OnStar knew about it but didn't do anything because you didn't pay for the service I wonder if someone might not challange that in court. I'm not saying I agree with it after all it is my decsion whether I keep On Star or not but if I die on some back road and On Star knows yet does nothing and my family sues....I'm not so sure.
My guess is they will respond no matter what for an airbag deployment. Just so there is no legal entanglement. On the stolen car thing they could always say "Sure, we can locate your car as soon as you re establish your service including a fee to re activate"

The only time On*Star can reduce the car speed to a crawl is if it is reported stolen (no other reason, not even at the request of LEO), the owner has authorized the action and the LEO has requested the action as a result of a report of it being stolen. On*Star then flashes the lights on the car so the LEO can confirm that that is the correct car. When confirmation is received from LEO the car is slowed to a crawl.
