C6 painted roof panels, recall, coming unglued.

C6 painted roof panels, recall, coming unglued.
Can anyone shed some light on the subject of the body colored roof panels flying off or coming unglued on the C6 models. I'm trying to find out if there was a recall, or a service bulletin about this and or what the years were with this problem.

SMC panels didn't make their way onto 2007's until into the production run in 2006. There are some 2007's with the problem, but not many. All 2005's and 2006's had the problem. It was a NHTSA recall - all panels were to be replaced. A large problem that should have been resolved by now.

No. The first month and a half of 2007 production was made using the old polycarbonate panels and a new adhesive bonding process at the factory called 'triple bonding.' The new SMC tops were not phased in at the assembly plant until August 3, 2006 and at that point it was not a total changeover. The panels arrive at the factory painted by the supplier, not painted at the plant. The changeover was made on a color by color basis until the supply of old panels was exhausted and the new SMC panels were started on the line. I am still unaware of any of the 2007 cars panels separating but this would be the scenario that would allow for it to happen. The SMC panels will not come apart for the reasons that drove the polycarbonate painted panel to come off.

99% of 2007's, all 2008 do not, have not, will not have this problem. The material was changed in 2007. The SMC panels do not have this problem that is what is in use on ALL 2008 painted top cars. The transparent panels have never had this problem.

Not so. The TSB said that if a roof had not separated from the frame at any location then the "fix" was to inject a foam adhesive. If there was any separation the roof was to be replaced. Mine had no separation and was injected with the foam adhesive. Last week my painted top starting making a crackling sound. Removed it and found that 18 inches had separated from the frame between the front latches. It's now being replaced. If your situation was like mine the "foam" fix does not work.

Mine too had the foam injection fix. I still kept receiving the recall postcard in the mail, so a year or so later, I took the car back to the dealer and they wound up replacing the roof. I don't think I actually had any separation. I just think the dealer wanted to make some money from GM.

I just found that my painted roof is coming loose from the frame across the rear. I can actually lift the fiberglass panel an inch or so off the rear frame.
My original factory warranty has now expired. I do have the GMPP extended warranty.
Will GM repair my roof under this recall even if the warranty has expired?

Not all 2006's have the problem, mine was one of the last ones built for the model year - built 2nd week June in '06. I have never received a recall notice from GM and my VIN is not listed in any of the TSB's. I have not had any problem with the roof panel delaminating, cracking noise, or otherwise.

Thanks for the clarifications, Paul. They did the adhesive injection on my 06 and, so far, mine's okay. I've been driving it for 2 years now and it is a DD, but it doesn't stay in the hot sun very long at a time.
