Default C6 LED tail lights ***REVIEW*** Mid America Motorworks

I just received my LED tail lights from midamericamotorworks.com

shown here:
http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette-7-41-8556.html

LEDS off

LEDS (running)

LEDS on!

They insisted they were a forum sponsor so I hope my posting their product is ok.

I received the lights in a box inside a box. Packaging was ok but the inner box looked like it had taken a few spills.

The lights come as a set of 4 with markings for left and right tail lights. This is important and necessary for proper fitment.

The install is pretty straightforward, unplug the old lights and plug in the new ones. The LED lights have some sort of load equalizer or resister box attached which I will get to later.

THE LIGHTS ARE BRIGHT! The difference is dramatic as shown below.

There are two brightness levels. One for braking and one for running.

Running compared to C5 at night

I'll get one compared to a stock lighted C6

Now, the question you have all been waiting for...Do they hyperblink?

The answer is YES. They Hyperblink, hyperflash or whatever you want to call it when the turn signals are on but not with the hazards. This is a FATAL ERROR as far as LED tail lights go. Keep in mind I could have a defective set and I plan on contacting Mid America Motorworks on monday to see what can be done.

In the mean time I will try to add a resistor that will equalize the load to see if I can resolve the problem.

Now, should you buy them?

They look ok, kinda cheesy if you ask me with the orangy-red lens. I am working on a correction for this which involves transplanting my stock RED lenses to the LED housings. I will keep you all informed and I may make this a product if it works and only after I become a forum sponsor.

There is another LED set that looks similar on ebay with a clear lens. IF YOU PLAN ON TINTING BLACK, buy the ebay ones and save $100.

I think they are the tail lights we have been waiting for with a few bugs to be worked out. If you want to be the first C6 on your block with LED tail lights, this is your answer.

They look fine, but I think I will stick with the stock ones for now.

Hyperblink is where they flash at an increased rate. Like if you had a tail light out, all the lights on that side of the vehicle would flash at an increased speed. This is due to the load of all the lights when working properly not being present and the capacitor that controls the blink trips faster.

I just spoke with MID AMERICA and the "Hyperblink" is not a defect.

$349 is still better than $749 for the other ones on ebay. These are damn decent.

Ok, after having the lights for a few days now, they have grown on me.

They look SICK on and off.

I have solved the hyper blink problem with 6 ohm 50 watt resistors.

I highly recommend these lights.

Default looks good

Can you take some more pics? Maybe one at night. Did you do all 4 lights or just the 2 outside ones?

I did all four. They come in a set of four. I'll take some pics with a real camera tomorrow.

Stay tuned!

Navy,

I'm the guy who designed the original LED taillights last year using the OEM housings. I couldn't get comfortable with the legal hurdles associated with selling new taillights. As far as the load resistors go, I found they get incredibly hot and couldn't figure out a decent place to mount them where they would not burn/melt something. Did you buy the basic 6 ohm ones that have a metal jacket, or something that has more heat dissipative area for easier mounting?

The heat can really build up if you have an automatic and/or in bumper to bumper traffic! Make sure it doesn't melt anything!

Let me know what I can do to help out

I bought load resistors from Superbrightleds.com they do have a metal jacket and "fins" to dissipate the heat. They do get extremely hot however. I gorilla taped them to the fiberglass tub for the trunk and they haven't let go yet and I don't expect the trunk to melt. I don't think they get any hotter than the light bulb they are replacing.

You are right, it does get extremely hot in that area.

It would seem that since these are DOT approved they are the answer we are looking for and you should definitely check them out!

Thanks fran! but I don't think it is wise to try to separate your OEM tail lights...ask me how i know.

True, the resistors probably don't get much hotter than the light bulb that they replaced, but I mounted them "free air" to the original black plastic taillight housing using a long bolt and some nuts at the end to space the resistor far away from the housing. The bolt conducts heat VERY well and after about a week, the housing started to melt around the hole that the bolt went through.

Fiberglass is a different story than plastic, but still, I'd check up on them after a few days just to make sure!! Don't want you to have a hole in your rear fascia

Absolutely. I appreciate the help. I mounted them to the tub so if it does melt; I'm not sure what would melt in fiberglass, resin maybe? anyways if it does melt it will be on the inside of the car. If I find that it doesn't melt after a week, I'll attach it with a screw.

BTW, how did you separate the tail light lens from the housing?

On the stock housings, you need to use a heat gun to separate the red lens from the black housing. Be careful and take your time though! It used to take me about 30-40 minutes to do one, now I can do it under 10 minutes flawlessly. The trick on the stock lens is there are "tabs" that indent into the black housing. Those tabs have the most sealant, so work on those first. Make sure you don't get the lens or housing so hot that it starts to warp or deform. If you take your time, it will be OK!

Holy "S" those are bright!!!! I think they look awesome, but I dont want to deal with modifying them with resistors etc.
