Default Remedy when the Key Fob is not being recognized

For the C6 that has been sitting a few weeks without being started, and the battery has not been charged during that time, but the battery is not dead...and the Key Fob has ceased to unlock the doors, and does not operate properly...what is the cure?

What is the solution to get car to recognize the Key Fob properly again?

Thanks

Open the rear hatch with the key, pull the release to open the door. Gain access to the hood latch and open the hood and put a charger on the battery. Your battery charge is too low to transmit the signal to complete the handshake between the RCDLR and the fob.

You can also try locating the fob closer to one of the three antennas on the outside of the car. They are located at each "B" pillar roughly at the back bottom of the window (drivers side and passenger side) and the third exterior facing antenna is in the rear. Hold the fob near the license plate or rear emblem and have someone try to open the door.

I've had a fob not recognized within a few blocks of the dealer when I bought an 05. It worked when I took the fob out of my pocket.
The dealer changed the fob battery....worked great.
Just another possible answer.

Thank you so much Gents for the quick replies.

Followed your instructions Talon90 to gain entry, DIC displays "Fobs not detected".

Placed Fob #1 in the glove box Fob recepticle with the buttons facing the passenger door and the car started fine. Removed it and no start, and "Fobs not detected" displayed again.

Is it likely the Fob battery is dead already in a 2008 C6 produced in Dec?

Fob #1 no response at all other than when it's in the glove box slot.

Fob #2 works properly to lock and unlock the doors, pop the hatch and start the car.

Suggestions please for Fob #1...

If it's the battery, which battery part # do I buy, and how do I open the Fob to replace it please? Do I just remove the spare key, and then just gently insert a screwdriver in the spare key area and spread it apart?

Many Thanks

Not very likely that the battery is dead but it is possible. The fob may be bad also. Here is how to replace the battery, and #:

Separate the halves of the transmitter with a flat, thin object inserted into the slot on the side or back of the transmitter.
Remove the old battery. Do not use a metal object.
Insert the new battery, positive side facing down. Replace with a CR2032 or equivalent battery.
Put the transmitter back together tightly.

Still under warranty, so if you are close to your dealer, pay them a visit. There is also a program update for the keyless entry system you may want to ask about having done as well.

Glad you got in. With the symptoms you describe above it certainly sounds like the fob battery. The information Chevtech described above should get you home. The CR2302 battery is available from several places including autoparts stores and Radio Shack to name a few. It is a fairly easy replacement. In interest of proving to yourself that it is the fob battery you could swap the battery from fob 1 to fob 2. A little extra work but it will rule out the fob itself being bad.

Try replacing the battery first and see if that solves your problem.

Chevtech,

What is the purpose of the program update please? What does it accomplish?

Thanks Talon90, thanks danl72,

Good idea, I will try that.

Also, after replacing the Fob battery is there any Fob programming, or placing the Fob in the glove box slot, etc?

Or is it just a battery replacement with no other fiddling and it works as before?

The update changes the range of the RCDLR antenna. This update is for folks that are having problems with the car believing that the fob is still in the interior and causes the horn to honk three times acting like the primary fob was left inside.

There is no reprogramming after a fob replacement is done. The code that is stored is stored with the car. The fob simply transmits and the car keeps all the information. You will be fine.

Here is the discription of the update, your car was built before this bulletin was released, so I would think an update would be wise. Just change the battery, I don't believe anything else is necessary, also there is supposed to be a message on the dash when a low battery is detected from a fob.

As TALON90 suggested, if you switch batteries and the problem goes with the battery you have found the battery to be bad, but if it still is the #1 fob that is inop, then a bad fob you have.

#PIC4642A: Occasional No Fob Detected Message On DIC Or Key In Reminder When Key Fob Outside Of Vehicle - keywords chime chirp horn no program RCDLR RKE transmitter - (Jan 14, 2008)

Subject: Occasional No Fob Detected Message on DIC or Key In Reminder When Key Fob Outside of Vehicle

Models: 2005-2008 Chevrolet Corvette

2005-2008 Cadillac XLR and V-Series

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This PI was superseded to add revised procedures that will recover the RCDLR when/if the RCDLR "Locks Up". Please discard PIC4642.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment of an occasional "No Fob Detected" message displayed on the DIC when the fob is located somewhere on the driver's seat. They also may comment that the fob reminder (3 horn honks) is heard when exiting the vehicle with the key fob. This is because the original RCDLR software does not adequately cover the driver's seat and it can also detect the fob when it is slightly outside of the driver's door. The new software will add a new zone to better cover the driver's seat, and it will also add a 2 second delay after the door closes before checking for the fob on the interior. This could affect all vehicles built prior to October 2007.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Important: Prior to programming per the information below, the Radio and HVAC Fuses MUST be removed and the ignition must be in "Key On Engine Off Mode" The radio and HVAC fuses can be located in the BCM fuse block on the passengers floor electrical center. One of the fuses is labeled RDO/S'BAND/VICS and the other is labeled HVAC/PWR SND.

Program the RCDLR with revised software using TIS-2-WEB "Pass Through" method. When programming, it is required to select "Replace and Reprogram ECU".

Important: If the programming procedure does not finish successfully and the RCDLR appears to be in a "locked up" state do not turn off the ignition, follow the directions below...

The RCDLR can be reset by removing the RCDLR fuse (#11 in the UBEC) for at least 30 seconds or longer and then reinstalling it. Once this fuse is reinstalled in the UBEC, there will be a 2 minute window to restart the programming of the RCDLR through TIS2WEB. Failure to restart the programming of the RCDLR through TIS2WEB within 2 minutes may cause programming to fail and this procedure will need to be repeated. It is recommended that the Tech 2 remain connected to the vehicle and that the TIS2WEB application is open and ready to program the vehicle prior to reinstalling RCDLR fuse #11 into the UBEC.

Use Labor Operation Number R9723 with a Labor Time of 0.4

Please Note the following two items:: DO NOT REPLACE THE MODULE - JUST REPROGRAM IT. ALSO FOB PROGRAMMING AND TPM LEARN IS NOT REQUIRED.

For Model years 2005-2007, use software version 25927325.

For Model Year 2008, use software version 25927326

To pop the fob open, a nickel is the perfect thickness for opening it without marring the plastic edges, and a bit of WD-40 wiped on the gasket will make it snap back together easier. And note the position of the old battery before you take it out as its easy to put the new one in upside down.
If your #1 fob was put in a place where it got squeezed for a while, one of the buttons could have been held down for a long time and this would explain the dead battery even though the fob is not very old. I have tested taking the battery completely out of the fob, and then putting it in the glovebox slot and my car started. So the battery could be VERY dead and the fob would still work in the slot.

There were some early 08's that had a problem with the module not recognizing the fobs. I don't remember the production dates but I'm sure somebody will come up with the info.
