Default Glove box latch snapped off today..

So my glove box latch snapped off when I went to open the glove box door. It broke off just above the key cylinder.. so the broken piece has the lock cylinder still attached.. If I buy a new one.. does it come with the lock cylinder or do I transfer it over...
I still can't get it open...
I would rather repair it myself then bring it in.. Any advice... part numbers.. etc...
Thanks in advance!
Mike

Mike, I had the same thing happen to me on my brand new 08....broke in the same place. I mentioned it to my sales person and they orderd the replacement right away. It looks like this may be a common thing?

It has been a minor problem, seems they had a bad batch. Lock cylinder transfers easily. I think it was a mid to late '07 manufacturing problem. You can still open it by pinching the metal piece at the top and pulling up.

Mine was already gone when I got the car! Replaced in 5 minutes on warranty after ordering the part.

Just had mine replaced on my less than 1200 mile 08. It is a common problem search the forum. I just am VERY gentile when and if I need to open it from now on.

Good luck!

Thanks... I don't want to bring it in for this... I will order the part and install it myself... Just wanted to be sure I get the right part(s).

Was it in fact a "bad batch" or is the problem really attributable to inadequate design?

(Real information and/or links would be greatly appreciated, since "opinion" here is of no help.)

I was looking at the replacement latch in the hope of being able to improve it a bit, but I can't see any way to make it stronger, other than machining a new one out of billet aluminum, or maybe 4000 series steel!

What makes people assume a "bad batch" was responsible for this problem?

This whole thing is ridiculous. One could locate a 40 year old Chevy in junkyard, operate the glove-box latch and be virtually assured that it would operate without breaking.

But the problem wasn't really reported until vehicles that were made in mid'07, so the latch had been working well for almost 3 years before that......makes me think it was just a bad batch.

Either that or they redesigned the latch such that it uses thinner walls and/or less durable plastic in order to save 1 cent per car. (While it sounds ridiculous, practices such as that aren't uncommon.)

You got that right. The one on my '40 Chev works perfectly as does all the rest of the 68 year old parts.

My 08 was built in August of 07.. I think the others also were early 08's So it very well could be a bad bunch... I used it like twice and barely touched it when it broke..

Was having a clear bra installed and left the car. When I returned to pick it up they apologized for breaking my glove compartment lock. They said they just opened it and it broke. They were looking for my telephone number as they had a question. They replaced it and gave me a free detail job thrown in. Mine is an '08 built in 6/07.

Have you tried pinching the metal piece, it will open easily.
