I have a clicking/binding noise on the right rear side. Sounds like a bearing binding. I attempted to duplicate it with the car in the air with no luck. Seems like you have to have weight on the suspension in order to get it to make noise. I can invoke it by rocking the car back and forth while its on the ground and pushing on the back bumper. I really noticed the noise coming from the right wheel hub area. Car had 40,000 trouble free miles. I have an appointment to take it in next Monday for diagnosis/repair. Someone else has reported a like problem on the other forum but on the drivers side.........

Same thing here ever since I've owned the car. Only happens while making slow sharp right turns (just after reversing out of the garage). Must be a black car thing. Let us know what you find out.

It's noticeable when you are coming to or leaving from a stop. Also when for let up (coast) or resume acceleration. Def seems like a forward/back movement noise........

You guys have the rear end issue. Mine did the same.

The Dealer has a bulletin to provide a changeout of the rear end oil to synthetic.

Then problem goes away. It's covered under your warranty.

It is clutch plates chattering. They did a fluid flush and refill on mine to get rid of it per the bulletin.

I know what the differential clutch chattering is.....mine was flushed/changed quiet some time ago. This is a different noise.......

Here's an update.....Just got a call back from the dealer. The noise was coming from the right wheel (hub?) bearing. The Axel nut was loose allowing the bearing to click/bind. I knew loose axle nuts were a problem with these but didnt have an appropriate size socket to check before now. Anyway, all is fixed and I'll be finding me an axel nut socket for the future. (Drivers side was at specs).

Thanks for following up with the status. I was wondering what the outcome was. I was tracing down an odd clicking that popped up recently and found out just a couple days ago that it was a loose rear tire. The noise only showed up when the vehicle had been driven a little bit.

I've never had the lug nuts off the car but I bought it earlier this year used. I found all four wheels had loose lugs. Tightened them all up and the noise went away. I would have never guessed from the sound that it was loose lugs.

The only reason I mention it is because I was starting to wonder if we had the same problem after you said you were sure it wasn't the clutch pack in the diff.

crap! i was so excited to see this thread title i was gonna tell u that was the problem the same thing happened to me as well.. and every other moron on this site said it was the diff!!

Most would automatically think the rear differential when you mention noise in the rear. Thats such a common problem with the C6's its almost silly not to assume that is where the noise is coming from. I had it (diff noise) too when new, but long ago had the fluid changed. I knew this wasnt differential clutch pack noise and I was looking at something different. I also was 99% sure it was the rear bearing area, but like I said I didnt have a socket (34mm) big enough to check/retorque the axel nuts. oh well....it ended well....I have 41,000 miles and the dealer didnt charge me anything (4 hours troubleshooting)(maybe they were embarassed it took them that long to figure it out/even had the shop forman in on it)....

Glad its fixed. Mine had a clunk type sound but turned out it was two sources. The first one was the same right axle nut was loose and was the majority of the sound. The second was the rear end-links. I haven't taken mine apart at all, so I'm not sure, but if any of you owned a C-5, the real axles go through the hubs via splines and over time, they lost lubrication and needed more. If the C-6's are the same and I would think they are, we can look forward to a clicking type sound when you are backing out or moving forward very slowly from a stop. Again, I don't know if they are the same, but suspect they are.

i actually had both noises in my rear but the one that bothered me was the loose axel nut cause it sounds like something is broken slapping around back there.. The differential problem just sounds like ur in a jeep stuck in 4x4 from the tires grinding.. I'm just sick of people not listening to what u have to say when u ask for help on here

Was the sound a sharp metallic creak that occurred only when reversing the torque on the axle? For example, one creak when you accelerated, another when you let off the gas (in gear), and so on?

If so, I don't think tightening the axle nut is going to help for long, if at all.

The problem is relative motion between the face of the hub and the face of the outer CV joint. This is inevitable because the axle splines are not an interference fit, and the axle nut cannot be tightened enough to effectively eliminate lash.

As far as I can figure out, it becomes audible once the two faces get a little dirty/corroded. It's happened to a lot of C5 guys, and to some of us higher-mileage C6 guys. Most C6s owners don't drive their cars much, so they haven't had this problem yet.

The solution is to pull out the half-shaft from the hub and lubricate the splines AND the hub face where it bears against the CV joint housing. That last part is essential -- I tried lubricating the splines only and it lasted one day. After lubricating the faces -- where the noise is coming from -- it's been silent for thousands of miles.

I used Honda Moly 60 spline grease, the stuff they use for shaft-drives in motorcycles.
